The book is a teen fiction series about a bunch of 17 year olds maturing and growing up into adults. It depicts their pain as well as happiness in growing up.
The plot is about a girl whose nickname is ‘little ear’ and her hearing on her left ear is bad so if you’re speaking from her left she won’t be able to hear. But supposedly all the sweet nothings can only be heard through the left ear. She’s an average girl who’s an introvert, but one day she meets Xu Yi. He gets together with Ba La, a girl who always wears green eye shadow and is very loud and open and happy. ‘Little ear’ becomes friends with Ba La and meets the guy Ba La really likes who is called Zhang Yang.

I didn't read this book but my childhood crush Wu Ah Ge (Alec Su) has directed a movie adapted from this novel. The movie will premier soon on 30th of April so I need to post this to support him for old time sake :P

This novel is quite dated, written in 2006. It is another youth novel kind of like That Year, Time Flew, So Young, You're Still Here etc. Due to the success of the adaptation of So Young, many youth novels are in the pipeline to be adpated into movies. I didn't grow up in China so I can't really relate to them & honestly have no interest in them. Probably bcos I am aleady old, well past my youth lol.
The review for this book is pretty good so you might want to read or listen to the novel before watching the movie.

Ba La dies in an accident.
Little ear gets together with Xu Yi, but they break up.
Zhang Yang and Jiang Jiao (the prettiest girl in school?) moves to Beijing but they have no money and they’re just wasting their life away. Jiang Jiao changes her name and becomes a singer and Zhang Yang breaks up with her. Little ear ends up with Zhang Yang.
Someone else dies. Someone sings at a bar. Someone falls off a scaffold. Someone tries to kill someone else with explosives. Someone loses their memory. Someone else loses their hearing in their left ear.
