  • This story begins with the female lead being expelled from her sect where she had been undergoing cultivation to become an immortal. She then meets the male lead, an ancient dragon demon, who is presently powerless as he was dismembered by his previous lover. The male lead and the female lead then embark on a journey where they attempt to retrieve all the male lead’s body parts and resolve the various mysteries that have been troubling the cultivation world.

Unlike most of Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s other novels, this novel is glaringly lacking in the hilarity factor. Whilst most of Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s novels tend to adopt a more relaxed tone, this is noticeably missing from the book, probably due to the numerous mysteries surrounding the two main leads. Furthermore, the female lead has received rather divided opinions, as the readers have largely divided themselves into two extremes – those who intensely dislike the female lead, and those who love her. This can be largely accrued to the female lead’s character, as Yan Hui is someone who is only willing to expend effort to care for those whom she loves, and tends to be rather unwilling when standing up for the rights of those she’s unfamiliar with. As such, when Yan Hui meets the male lead, she continually refuses his request to help him in his quest to collect his body parts as the quest is an extremely dangerous one. That said, she does finally relent and the two start on their journey.

The male lead, being an ancient dragon demon who has been betrayed by his loved ones, is rather guarded and wary of people at the start, and does not truly come clean with Yan Hui until much later. For most parts of the book, although the male lead cares for Yan Hui, he is not above manipulating her and trying to steer her to head in the direction he wants her to go. Although he is very cautious of people, he gradually lets down his guard when Yan Hui continually protects him on numerous occasions, frequently putting her life on the line for him despite it being of no benefit to her. That said, due to the male lead’s past relationship history and the female lead’s affections for her teacher, the romance in this book moves rather slowly when compared to Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s other books.

In short, this is a hit/miss book, depending on whether one likes the female lead or not, and is rather different when compared to Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s other books.

  • @ princessblaine

I finished the book, but I didn't care very much for the female lead in that she didn't particularly stand out to me. I did like the male lead though.

If you want to read Jiu Lu Fei Xiang's books, I think it's better to go with any of the following: (a) Sansheng, Death Exists Not At the River of Oblivion; (b) Seven Unfortunate Lifetimes All Thanks To A Single Moment of Impulse; and (c) Accompanying the Phoenix. I think those three books are her more representative works. :)

Ah, I would say this novel isn't as draggy as Si Ming was, but it was definitely lacking (for me, at least). The female lead's been a hit/miss amongst the readers. In addition, the second male lead has quite a fair number of shippers as well, which detracts from Jiu Lu Fei Xiang's usual style of ensuring that the male lead and female lead were made for each other. You can give it a try though, if the premise interests you (:

Sure thing! ^^ If you ever get around to reading it do let me know your thoughts! I was so excited to start a new Jiu Lu Fei Xiang book (she has quite a couple of hits in my eyes), only to be somewhat let down by this book. :/

    @ silhoutte

Accompanying the Phoenix has been introduced on SSB previously, the link is as follows: https://www.shushengbar.net/?p=6574
The Chinese name is 与凤行/本王在此. Do give it a shot, I think it's a pretty lovely book with an awesome male and female lead.

    (c) Accompanying the Phoenix.

Would appreciate if you could give a brief summary of the above title and translate this title to Chinese that I can search for it?

    Thanks!

  • Hi there...i am also another big fan of "阿九" ancient books..I second all dramabooksandsea recommendation...those 3 are very good read for me too...hence i was even a little dissappointed on this book..more than "魔尊"-demon lord. I finished this book in 2 days. There is too much shadow of Guoguo's 花千骨"。。i like 阿九 books being funny and short..this is way too draggy...plus i find myself very much a shipper of her /her master :( There is another master/disciple series which i really like..so far both are written in short stories...for those who can read chinese, u might like to check this too "师父系列" by the same author .thks for putting this up ♡♡♡♡

  • @snow berries

I DEFINITELY WILL CHECK OUT THE MASTER DISICPLE SERIES!!! I didnt know it existed so thanks for the heads up! Are they HE?
Have you read 桑歌?Its another short story by Nine that i recently discovered in the abyss known as the internet. Its kinda bittersweet and a nice read on the bus.
