Standing at a mere 48 chapters, Hushed Whispers is a really easy and relaxing read for those who are looking for a reprieve from the heavier and more hard hitting novels. As usual, Jiu Lu Fei Xiang adopts her usual, comical and hilarious tone whilst writing this novel, and is fairly easy to get through.
In this novel, Lin Qing Yu, the female lead, gets transported into a male's body at the start of the novel, and she became extremely elated - mainly because of the innumerable struggles she suffered whilst she was in the body of a female (her mother's gender bias, the workplace discrimination against the feminine sex, etc). Now that she gets to relive part of her life as a male, she intends to truly explore all the opportunities being a male brings her, to live a fun and fulfilling life. Of course - in this new world where she appears to be the sole person who remembers her past female identity, there is, in actuality, another person who remembers his past life as well, and that is Su Yi An, who had transformed into... a tree. In their past lives, Su Yi An was Lin Qing Yu's professor, and childhood friend, so he is not unfamiliar with Lin Qing Yu when she shows up in her new male body and starts whispering all her deep, dark secrets to his belly button.
Gradually, the male lead manages to transform back into his own body, and the story gradually progresses from there as the male and female (male?) leads rekindle their childhood friendship and develop feelings for each other. Part of the hilarity comes from the fact that every single time Lin Qing Yu does something "touching" or "sweet", Su Yi An would feel extremely touched, until he turns around to see Lin Qing Yu in her male appearance - muscly and with a moustache, no less. Then all sorts of romantic feelings Su Yi An initially had would fly out of the window instantly. This novel also explores how Lin Qing Yu gradually comes to terms with her female identity, and how to accept and love herself for who she really is, but do not expect great exploration of plot mechanisms (like, why do they time travel in the first place?), because it's really just a simple and light novel at heart.
So does Lin Qing Yu go back into her original body?
