Well, I think it’s sweet that he’s been in love with her for 12 years. My complaint is that nothing happens in the plot. I felt bored reading it. Ahhhh, I said I was going to read Marriage, but I completely forgot because I stumbled onto a new story.
It’s 放弃你，下辈子吧 by 桩桩. The plot is simple, but I’m enjoying it a lot because it’s hilarious. The main guy reluctantly goes on a matchmaking date to appease his mom. He doesn’t like the main girl at first sight, but she kind of looks down on him thinking he’s an uneducated gangster. His pride is hurt so he comes up with this idea that he’ll make her fall in love with him so he can dump her to teach her a lesson. Hilariously, as he begins to woo her, he falls for her but she hates his guts and avoids him like the plague, lol. She keeps telling to pls leave her alone and she doesn’t like him, but he shamelessly stalks her. It’s soooo funny in that whenever he wants her to do something, he tells her to do it and he’ll leave her alone. She does it, but the next day he shows up again, lol. This keeps happening over and over.
Ahhh, memories. This was the third chinese novel I read (after BBJX and DMY). Dislike all of the male characters: LCY was an ass, GJ was a weakling, and PZ was a doormat. Loved the female characters though. They definitely deserved better.

Not done yet but I think it’s happy ending. The plot is silly and funny and revolves around a guy’s obsessively chasing a girl until he wears her down, lol. I need something to cheer me up so that’s why I’m enjoying it. I think this author is a hit and miss though.

I keep imagine the actress for Min Min from BBJX as XF and (of course) Yuan Hong as LYC. Actually, for a lil while, I totally shipped Min Min and P13 in an unrequited love kind of way.
I would LOVE it if Guo Xiao Ting (I think is her name?) is XF! I liked her immediately in BBJX but couldn’t remember where I had seen her because she seemed familiar. Had to go to dramawiki then I realized she was the adorable potato in Chinese Paladdin 3. She and Yang Mi were really cute and funny together. I loved it whenever she was tired, she would turn back into a potato to refresh her energy, lol.
Oh ya, I like Min Min also. Why nobody cast her in HXY? I prefer her more than what is her name who’ll be in HXY as Ying Ge. This is another reason why I dun fancy Yuan Hong. Actually, in a counterfactual, I think if 13 didn’t have to stay by 4’s side and he never met Lu Wu, he could be very happy with Min Min. She is equally as carefree as he is. But I think Min Min’s story is suppose to put into perspective the lives of the women who in the Qing royalty. Her family loves her too much to wish Ming Hui’s fate on her – so many wives, you may have the highest rank but it wouldn’t matter if he doesn’t love you or have any affection for you. Worst, he may be utterly indifferent to you. For that same reason, they sent Cheng Huan to Min Min, so that she’ll have a happy and carefree life too.
I might be in the minority, but I prefer YH as Shen An than Jun Wei. JW is a funny sidekick, and my feeling is YH has been in the business long enough to not play such a role. Shen An is hateful, but it’s still a meaty character. The drama might make the character more complex, and if YH does a good job interpreting the role, it might actually turn out good. I’m OK with evil/hateful characters if the actors can do a good job.
No, no, of course not as Ying Ge. Definitely as Ah Fu. But pairing Min Min with KC is a no no.

Hi! I’m new here. 🙂 I just started getting into Chinese audiobooks, and I’m currently listening to Eastern Palace, after reading xia0yuer’s excellent and highly detailed summary. (I prefer to know how a story ends before starting it – I have a weak heart and can’t handle angst unless I can at least prepare for it beforehand. 🙂
Eastern Palace would normally be the kind of book that I wouldn’t read, as it doesn’t end happily, and I prefer happy books or at least books that end happily. However, after reading xia0yuer’s scene translations I got curious. This book is also surprisingly easy to skim through (of course, having xia0yuer’s detailed summary helped a lot :).
(By the way, xia0yuer, if you’re reading this, I hope you can continue writing highly detailed summaries of other Chinese novels! It helps immensely in deciding what book to pick up next. 🙂
Off topic, but has anyone here listened to Xiang Mi Chen Chen Jin Ru Shuang? For some reason, I find the audiobook difficult to get through, compared to other audiobooks. Without the help of xia0yuer’s translations, I’d probably only be able to understand 10% of what is going on.
Anyway, back to Eastern Palace: I was surprised to find that the author is also the one who wrote “Too Late To Say I Love You” and “Sealed With A Kiss”. I haven’t read either of those 2 books and only know them through their TV adaptations; I skimmed through TLTSILY and it seemed convoluted, and I wouldn’t touch SWAK with a 10-foot pole (I detest the rape-becomes-love trope). By comparison, Eastern Palace is a very simplistic book, with only a handful of characters who are worthy of any note.
Does anyone have any information about the TV adaptation that is supposed to be made of this book? I honestly feel like it would work better as a movie than as a drama, because really, not that much happens, although China so loves its political machinations dramas that I’m sure they’ll just beef up that part in the drama, which is mostly missing from the book (until the end).
Hi, welcome to SSB ! You smart girl, found out the ending b4 jumping into the book whereas I started straight away after xiaoyuer posted her initial impression. My, my, when I heard the last 10 or so chapters, I cried like a baby:( I also have a weak heart after flooding my bedroom with Yun Zhong Ge:( Anyway it is a good book which I didn’t regret reading but my poor heart.
Xiaoyuer is one busy lady lately so if you need help, we are here for you:) Xiang Mi Chen Chen Jin Ru Shuang is kind of difficult to understand bcos it is an ancient book plus xian xia genre which makes it harder. When I listened to it, I also can’t fully understand here & there. Then I read xiaoyuer’s translations which helped a lot. Normally I stay clear of book of this genre unless they are very good. Can you read Chinese? What kind of book do you like? You like Tong Hua’s books, the author of Bu Bu Jin Xin? I think I’ve listened to enough audiobooks to give you a few recommendations:)
The drama TLTSILY is kind of different from the book especially the last part. Anyway, I am not very fond of it except watching Wallace in uniform, lol. The author is Fei Wo Si Chun who had another novel filmed into a drama called The Girl in Blue with Roy Qiu, Feng Xiao Feng & Chen Qiao En. A word of warning, you need to prepare some tissues. There is also an audiobook on it. So far, no news on TV adaptation of this book. I’ll keep you posted on it. If you want to listen to a novel which will be filmed into a drama, I recommend you Hua Xu Yin which will star Kevin Cheng, Yuan Hong & Jiang Xin. But be warned, the novel & drama will be quite different.
Mei – Don’t let Peanuts suck you into Who Gets the World… It’s almost complete but not quite so you’ll be left hankering for more. 😛
I just finished EP… or rather I could not stand the last 10 chaps… so i jumped straight to the last two. Utterly tragic. Also, the huli song is stuck in my head… complete with off key singing from the audiobook.
Go for Hua Xu Yin – lovely audiobook production… and the ending is not as gut wrenching.

Finished listening to Eastern Palace last night and went to sleep with a heavy heart. Do any of Fei Wo Si Cun’s books have happy endings? I liked the 2 female characters but have mixed feelings about the 3 male characters. Who wants to have a character discussion with me? 😀
Peanuts, I’ve read BBJX and think that Tong Hua is an excellent writer. However, I was mopey for literally weeks after finishing BBJX, so I’ve sort of developed an allergy to her books. Having your heart shredded into a million little pieces by a work of fiction is painful!
Next on my list of audiobooks to try are Xiang Mi Chen Chen Jin Ru Shuang and Liu Hua Jin Ai. As you may have noticed, both books are currently being translated into English. 😀 I can read Chinese decently enough, but being able to read the English translations first definitely helps a lot in deciding whether to pick up a book. There are so, so, so many books out there that I don’t want to waste time on duds. And I figure, if someone is willing to put in the energy to translate a book, it must have its merits.
HuiEr, thanks for the heads-up. I think I’ll wait until AFTER the “Who Gets The World” audiobook is complete to try it, no offense to Peanuts. 😉 Nothing worse than being left hanging. This is also why I haven’t read Hamster428’s translation of the 3L3W10MPB Pillow Book, as I hear it ends on a massive cliffhanger.
I think HurEr will love to discuss with you bcos she has also finished the audiobook last night. I basically wrote all I wanted to say to her which is I dislike all the male characters. Haha, I know this is hard sell but you must listen to Who Gets the World when the audiobook has been completed bcos the male lead has similar background to Li Cheng Yi but in the end he smartly took the road less taken so we can cry tears of happiness:P Yes, I know how it felt like being on the cliff as HurEr & I are resorting to reading the physical book with google translate, lol. One last word on that is the quality of that audiobook if not the best then one of the best:)
Tong Hua’s Da Mo Yau & Yun Zhong Ge have been translated to English so they do have their merits:P If you ship the right boat, Da Mo Yau isn’t weepy at all. Whereas YZG is just too sad for words yet it is a good book.
Chancy has lots of love for Liu Hua Jin Ai but I am not fond of the audiobook bcos that reader put me to sleep:P I am not sure abt the ending but I think the boat I am shipping sank. So you better get on the right boat or else u’ll end up all wet !!!! If you like xian xia book, I’ll recommend you Chong Zi, a high quality audiobook which is much loved by scholars in SSB.
In the meantime, read Xiang Mi Chen Chen Jin Ru Shuang as HuiEr has just started & we’ll talk abt it. It is really funny but I think by halfway mark become quite angsty. But don’t worry, HEA ending which is also very funny:)

I got really really abused by FWSC in Eastern Palace. On so many levels, it is a beautifully crafted story. But at the same time, it is like watching a car crash. I kept wondering, was there a point where LCY could have stopped? Could he have halted the massacre on XF’s maternal tribe on the day of his wedding? From the moment he proceeded with the betrayal, they have passed a point of no return. I don’t think anything – even their love – could have saved them. Question is would it be different if LCY proved his love for her by catching the 100 fireflies as she asked.
Perhaps, the only thing that could have been done differently was that if only she was not taken hostage by GJ in place of the emperor. That was the trigger that set all the dominoes falling one by one. The game was set many years ago, but only toppled 3 years later when she remembered.
Peanuts – my favourite scene is also when grammy locked them up and sent them drugged food. Those were probably the happiest days they spent together, in a world with only two of them – no memories of betrayal, anger and loss. It is also the saddest scene, because it showed us that they could have been so happy together.
HuiEr, that is an excellent question. To be honest, I’m not sure that even if LCY had captured those 100 fireflies that XF really would have been able to “si xin ta di” married him as she said she would. She might have been able to wall off the massacre for a time, but not forever, and so in the end, she would have just been thrown into more inner turmoil. I suppose in some ways, LCY’s refusal was a cruel blessing, in that it allowed her to stay true to her ideals at the expense of her love.
Towards the beginning of the book, there is a scene in which the Empress gets angry at LCY for his devotion to Zhao Liang Di and warns him that his love for her could cause him to give up his “jiangshan” for his “meiren”. Obviously, we find out later that everything with ZLD was just an act; however, I see that scene as a foreshadowing of his relationship with XF, in that his love for her was deep enough that, in another story, he might have been one of those men who would have given up everything to be with her. Alas, they were fated to fall in love but not fated to be together.
One scene that remains imprinted in my mind is the one in which XF asks LCY if he would kill her if she threatened his empire. LCY answered no, but he first tried to avoid answering the question, which made my heart sink a bit, as it demonstrated that at least subconsciously, LCY believed his jiangshan to be more important than his meiren. On the other hand, seeing what a mess he was after XF’s death, I can’t decide if he would have really done so, i.e., killed her. Then again, seeing the way he managed to half-delude himself for 30 years that XF was still alive, perhaps he would have assassinated her and then deluded himself into believing that his political enemies did the deed and not him.
Thus, my feelings toward LCY are probably as complicated as XF’s are; I like him because of his love for her, but dislike him for all the bad things he did to her.
Ultimately, I see how XF’s death was the best solution to everything, even though I was terribly sad to see her die. If she had returned with LCY to the Eastern Palace, willingly or unwillingly, she would have just been more miserable, especially without A Du by her side. And LCY would never have been able to love her freely, because that would have just made XF a bigger target for his political enemies.
In the end, LCY falls into that perennial category of men who want it all (i.e., jiangshan and meiren) but don’t realize or refuse to realize that they can’t and must choose one or the other. Thus, when they try to possess both, their selfishness leads to tragedy.
Has FWSC written any ancient books with happy endings? I know she has some modern books with happy endings, but I generally don’t read modern books. Not quite sure why; perhaps the stakes seem more heightened when set in ancient times?
Peanuts, I unfortunately was on the wrong ship for DMY. I think I didn’t really like that book because I didn’t really like the OTP. They were both too arrogant for my taste.
Actually, I seem to have an unfortunate habit of shipping second male leads. I think this means that in general, I prefer my men humble and gentle, although the right Mr. Darcy-type can still make my knees go weak. 😉
I fortunately got on the right ship for Liu Hua Jin Ai. Yes, he’s her brother, but I can ship them because in their world, it’s not at all taboo (and actually the norm), so I’m okay with it. Also, he is so utterly devoted to her and her only, unlike the male lead, who time and again chooses his duty to the world.
By the way, is there any way to cut down the amount of spam on this site? I subscribe to SSB via RSS, and it’s rather annoying having spam show up in my feed, especially since I can’t selectively delete it, not even after it’s been deleted on the site. I shipped HQB for the 1st half of DMY bcos I read Hu Ge will portrayed him. Then when it is confirmed he’ll be MJ, I jumped ship, lol. I was annoyed with MJ’s rejection although I can understand his reasoning for the first half of the book. When I read the sacrifices he went thru to bring her happiness, I was so touched that I just had to change ship.
It is quite rare for 2nd male lead to get the girl so you need plenty of tissues:P After all, they are not called 2nd male lead for nothing lol. I can recommend u a book where I think the 2nd male lead gets the girl. The audiobook will be coming out soon so you’ve to wait patiently. In the meantime, do give 浮生梦·三生约 a try as most of us ship the 2nd male lead a lot. It has a good audiobook. Btw, are you shipping the night deity in 香蜜沉沉烬如霜? How do you like the book? I have never liked LCY bcos if he loves QF very much, he would have given up his jiangshan for her. Thus he loves himself & his jingshan more than QF. Even worse is that he should have released QF back to her home country Xi Liang but he is too selfish to be selfless. I’ll consider the book having a good ending if XF gets to roam freely in the prairie & LCY living in regret for the rest of his life. Don’t like how FWSC killed her & give us a delusional LCY:(
Btw most males in ancient novels will choose the jiangshan instead of the mei ren. Thus, I don’t really like ancient novels. I know I should read it in the context of the time but my modern sensibility just won’t allow me to do so, haha…I can recommend you a few ancient tragic novels with jerks like LCY if you ever want to clean your eyes, lol. I don’t think FWSC has written an ancient novel with HE bcos she is not called the step-mum for nothing. If I ever come across one, I’ll definitely post it up:) Oh, you should give the audiobook of some modern novels as try as some are really good.

Peanuts, you guessed correctly, I’m shipping the Night Deity in XMCCJRS. I’m just not fond of the way the Fire Deity lords over JM; their relationship starts off on very unequal footing. Although, from what I understand, the Night Deity initially gets close to JM in order to use her against the Fire Deity. Nevertheless, at least on the surface, he still treats her better than the Fire Deity. Oh, question, does the Empress, i.e., the Fire Deity’s mother, ever get her comeuppance? I think I read xia0yuer’s spoiler that the Empress killed JM’s mother, i.e., the Flower Deity, and the Empress also tries to kill JM, so the Water Deity, i.e., JM’s father, tries to kill the Empress to protect JM, but he gets killed by the Fire Deity, who is protecting his mother. When I read that, I’m afraid my thoughts toward the Fire Deity turned rather sour.
Oh, I’m well aware that, whether in reality or in fiction, most men would choose their jiangshan over their meiren. Whether I think well of their choice depends on what is driving their choice, such as whether it’s out of responsibility or selfishness.
There are multiple reasons why I prefer stories set in ancient times rather than in modern times. I won’t list them all out, but one is that I have a lot less tolerance for stupid characters in modern stories, and especially female ones.

I think when General Pei realised that XF remembered, he knew that there was no point in trying to get her back to the Eastern Palace. The only way out was to let her return to Xi Liang.
But from LCY’s perspective – he thought he only lost to an unknown lover. If that is the case, he is arrogant enough to believe that he can change her mind with time. Perhaps, if he had known the devastating truth, he would not have forced her into a corner… or at least, would have hesitated more. But to him, he was being the bigger person. His wife had left him, tried to kill him, for another man – according to both the law of the nation and morals – he had every right to kill her instead. If he had remembered earlier, perhaps he would have handled the situation differently – or even come to the same realisation as General Pei – that the only way to preserve XF’s life is to let her go.

HuiEr, you’re so good at analyzing books. 🙂 I hadn’t even thought about the situation from LCY’s POV, as I was so caught up in XF’s. You’re absolutely right that even a neutral party, without knowing the whole story, would think that XF was in the wrong, for leaving her husband and trying to kill him all for another man.
Actually, I think that even if LCY had known the truth earlier, he would not have been able to let XF go. She’s his one blind spot, and he can’t think very rationally wherever she’s concerned. In fact, I think that knowing the truth sooner would’ve just made his grip on her tighter, since I think until he recovered his memories, he still didn’t know how deep his love for XF actually ran. I actually think that LCY is in some ways more “romantic” than XF is, in that he probably thinks that as long as he and XF deeply love each other, they can somehow overcome the obstacles between them (of course, he was also the one to put those obstacles there in the first place; if their roles had been reversed …). Alas, XF is too principled to put aside the massacre of her maternal tribe, and she’s also too free-spirited to be forever caged by the Eastern Palace and imperial intrigue. Sigh, fated to love, destined to part.
It’s too bad that neither of the other 2 male characters were stronger contenders, if not for XF’s affection then for mine. I think Gu Jian was supposed to fulfill the role of the 2nd male lead, but I was annoyed at him 95% of the time, although his sacrifice at the end did touch me. He just completely went about the wrong way trying to convince XF to leave with him, even if he was right that XF would be happier far and away from the Eastern Palace.
As for Pei Zhao, I’m still divided as to whether he had any personal feelings for XF, or if everything he did for her was motivated out of a mixture of guilt and duty. I lean towards the former, but ultimately, his love for LCY will always come first – so as xia0yuer so succinctly put it, he was a doormat, and that’s why I can’t like him. The best, and most rebellious, thing he ever did for XF was to let her go at the end – too bad LCY had to show up in time to put the kibosh on that.

All of FWSC’s books have English titles but none has been completely translated to English. If you can read Vietnamese, there is probably a translated one.
Mei – Thank you. If it helps, LCY spends the next 30 years regretting and longing for XF to the point he’s almost delusional. It’s very sad.
Argh. I’m not sure if I have mentioned before, but reading/listening to EP makes me feel like i’m looking at a car crash. It’s like, their falling in love was an accident that causes so much misery in the end. And it’s inevitable. You can’t really blame LCY for “betraying” her because he was really just doing his job/duty imposed on him by royal command. So everything that happens from then onwards was on a linear line – the ending that they cannot be together was determined before it even began.
I think it’s all the more tragic in that sense because, it’s not even a case where they can fight fate so to speak. It goes against our modern idea that if you can always achieve the results you want if you fight hard enough. In this case, I think there wasn’t any way that they could be together, and just knowing that makes me both happier and sadder – that the author didn’t sell out for an illogical HEA and at the same time, I gnash my teeth at their doomed love. I guess from FWSC’s perspective, this is the best response she can hope for from a reader.

Fan Bing Bing is “involved” in the drama adaptation of Eastern Palace. I’m hoping FBB will play XF’s mom, but I doubt it. Everyone’s worst nightmare Yu Zheng is also involved in this project. I’m waiting for confirmation that Li Chen is LCY so I can keel over and die. The only consolation out of this mess is ♥Wallace Huo♥ will stay as far away from this mad crowd as possible.
Good-bye, my beloved book! The ending broke my heart. I won’t be watching the drama version to see what shenanigans FBB and Yu Zheng have up their sleeves, but just the thought alone is enough to break my heart all over again. Hopefully, SARFT will abuse their censorship power like they always do and prevent this drama from ever seeing the light of day.
The rumor is darling Zhao LiYing might be in the movie version so I’m keeping an eye out for that. Might I request Wallace Huo as LCY? That way, we’ll have an alternate version of The Journey of Flower if BZH and HQG were Chinese royalty instead of Chang Liu’s Sect Leader and Demon God.
I’ve just finished this book (Thai ver) and I don’t like it. Xiao Feng’s life is the worst one I could have imagined. It’s like everything in her life forces her to resolve in that tragic way and it’s too devastating. I’m quite disappointed because there are tragedies that are impressive, imo, like Once Promised, but not this book. This is absolutely not one of my favorite books.
