Heavy Sweetness, Ash-like Frost (Ashes of Love) 香蜜沉沉烬如霜 by 电线 Dian Xian (HE)

heavysweetness

In the prehistoric times, the 200,000 year of Tian Yuan, the flower deity Zi Fen dies after giving birth to a daughter. Before she passed, she fed her daughter the Unfeeling Pill, ordered her subordinates to keep the girl’s birth story a secret and to imprison her within Shui Jing for ten thousand years. The girl’s name is Jin Mi.

Four thousand years later, the Heavenly Emperor’s second son, the Phoenix Fire Deity was entrapped by someone and mistakenly entered Shui Jing. He was saved by the ignorant Jin Mi. After living together for a hundred years, the Fire Deity gradually developed feelings for Jin Mi. Who would have thought that he would be attracted to Jin Mi?

In between the Heavenly World and the Devil World, there is an immeasurably deep River of Forgetfulness, where the war between the Fire Deity and Night Deity finally erupts.

*Love, love, love this book as well as xiaoyyuer’s translations:) Anyone know any other book written by this author? Although I like Tang Qi Gong Zi, I find this book better than 3L3W10MPB in term of plot & characters. The story is much more interesting & exciting plus less choppy. The characters are also more endearing & memorable. This is my personal opinion only & I am not criticising 3L3W10MPB so 3L3W’s fans, pls don’t get annoyed with me. To each its own:)

Although sometime, I get annoyed with Jin Mi for being too naive & clueless, I do enjoy her simple & funny interactions with others. I miss her terribly after she spit out the unfeeling pill. I can feel the love between her & Fire Deity more than the other book. Also, Fire Deity is more likeable as he didn’t take Jin Mi’s eyes away no matter under what circumstances:P Fire Deity is a tad too serious for my liking. It’ll be nice if he is more humorous. Btw, why people say this book is similar to 3L3W as I can’t see where is the similarity?

There is similarities in the writing style between Tang Qi and Dian Xian I suppose. I don’t know where the comparisons come from. I just know that the characters in Tang Qi’s stories have more of a ‘modern’ mentality. They’re always poking fun at modern aspects like guy-guy an such.

This is one of my faves! The main couple is adorable and hilarious together that one can’t help but love them. I’ve read this so many times that I pretty much have memorized the story, and it never fails to crack me up whenever I re-read it. The disappointing is I think this author has only written 2 novels, right? sigh~~~ Wish the author would write more.

For me, the similarity is in the writing style. Both authors have an off-beat, humorous way of writing that cracks me up.

There’s been a lot of comparisons between 3W3L10MPB and Heavy Sweetness, probably because both stories are the most popular in the fantasy genre so there’s bound to be comparisons? I don’t know. But in terms of similarity in characters, I think the main female character in Hua Xu Yin and Jin Mi in Heavy Sweetness are more alike in that they’re both way too naive for their own good but absolutely adorable in their bumbling way. Oh, and they’re paired with a hot, too-awesome-for-words crown prince XD.

Heehee, I also like Su Yu more than Shu Feng but don’t write this on XiaOyuer’s tumblr because she & Melanie love Shu Feng, lol. When you mentioned it, I agreed Ah Fu rather than Susu/Bai Qian is more similar to Jin Mi. However HXY is such a sad book. Luckily Ah Fu is so bumbly or else I would have flooded my room with tears:P

But it seems the translator is working at a good, steady pace. Are you able to get the entire book in audio? ahhhh, I’m jealous! Finally, finally got around to reading the epilogues. They are so cute!!!! Though, it seems that Jin Mi doesn’t like to ‘shuang xiu’ with the Phoenix that much… And their little egret son, hehe. It seems that water is more dominant than fire.

I feel somewhat bad for Ren Yu because he is still alone (he just moved from his Xuan Ji Palace to the Heavenly Palace), but I do admire him for allowing Jin Mi to find her own happiness with Xu Feng. He’s 1000000x better than his father.

  15. Peanuts
    Peanuts August 24, 2012 at 12:06 am |

You like the book so much, why only now you read the epilogues? I listened to the epilogues so many times I’ve lost count, haha….Jin Mi regained her cute personality in the epilogues as I feel she become too weepy in the last part of the book. The part on her pregnancy is so funny as well as she teaching the son to fish for a wife:) She is also not that interested in getting ‘lingli’ anymore which angers Phoenix, heehee…

  16. xia0yuer
    xia0yuer August 24, 2012 at 3:55 am |

I wanted to savor the bittersweetness of the ending, so I held off on reading the epilogues. And then I got distracted by everything else… I didn’t have anything else to listen to today and I remembered that I still haven’t listened to the epilogues, so I finally got around to them today.

Ahahaha, only Jin Mi would think of fishing for a mermaid for her son. It’s like when she told Xiao Yu Xian Guan that he could buy a mortal wife. 😀

The Phoenix and Jin Mi are such an odd but functional couple. I wonder how much lingli Jin Mi has now? What will happen when her lingli surpasses the Phoenix? Hehe.

I just started this book today! I must admit that it was hard to start at first coz i got lost in the plot but once I got to the part when Jin Mi meets the “crow”, things did start picking up!!

I actually like her! A lot! For being so dimwitted, though no fault of hers since she ate the 陨丹 as a baby, and for being so simple… I think the adjective given her by 飞絮 was 缺心眼 which literally translates to lacking eyes to the heart but I just like her undiscerning she is!

I shall go and continue devouring the book heh!

Eh? Is this where everyone has been congregating? Xia0yuer is no longer translating the Jin Mi story? 🙁

Since the translation has stopped, can someone give me a summary of what happens after chapter 6? I have a vague idea, but the details are sort of hazy to me. How did Xu Feng die? How did he revive himself? What happened after his revival? How did he and Jin Mi meet up again? How did Jin Mi die at the end? She did die, didn’t she? Because somehow, she was reborn again and somehow Xu Feng knew where to find her reincarnation. What confused me was how Jin Mi seemed to act exactly like her old funny self in the epilogue. Didn’t she reincarnate and was technically a different person? How did her reincarnated version attain immortality if she was reborn as a human? How could she remember all the deities (Xu Feng, Ren Yu, etc.) once she reincarnated?

I will say that the epilogue was extremely enjoyable, or from what I could understand of it. Jin Mi did seem to enjoy shuang xiu less than Xu Feng did. Ha. It seemed like she was using sexual distraction whenever Xu Feng was angry with her or if she wanted something from him. Their little son was adorable. I also thought Xu Feng’s intense desire for a baby was cute, too.

Ah, Ren Yu. I feel really sorry for him, especially when Jin Mi told him earnestly that he must be happy, too, and he just smiled gently before leaving. Jin Mi thought he was happy, but I don’t think he was. He attained his throne, but it was just an empty victory. Xu Feng was the one who really won; he had a loving family, happiness, whereas Ren Yu had his title of Heavenly Emperor, a cold substitute in my opinion. But I was glad the author didn’t randomly give Ren Yu some love interest at the end. It would have seemed as if she was merely trying to “pretty up” the ending unnecessarily.

Dropping in here from the thread on Eastern Palace/Goodbye My Princess, where Mei has asked: does the Empress, i.e., the Fire Deity’s mother, ever get her comeuppance?

And Peanuts (knowing that I have been rabidly blitzing through this book) has bade me to drop the answer here (behold your power, P, for I have obeyed as you commanded – :P)

Spoilers ahead for the Empress and Emperor’s fates.

So, the Heavenly Emperor (Fire and Night’s father in this case) punished the Heavenly Empress as follows: “Arrest the Heavenly Empress and incarcerate her in the Pi Suo Prison. She is deposed of her position as heavenly empress and [her name] is forbidden to enter the Immortal Records forevermore.”

I don’t think there was any other punishment other than this.

As for the Heavenly Emperor, (from what I gathered) he was exiled by the Night Deity to an island outside of the heavens.

    Mei:

Peanuts, you guessed correctly, I’m shipping the Night Deity in XMCCJRS. I’m just not fond of the way the Fire Deity lords over JM; their relationship starts off on very unequal footing. Although, from what I understand, the Night Deity initially gets close to JM in order to use her against the Fire Deity. Nevertheless, at least on the surface, he still treats her better than the Fire Deity. Oh, question, does the Empress, i.e., the Fire Deity’s mother, ever get her comeuppance? I think I read xia0yuer’s spoiler that the Empress killed JM’s mother, i.e., the Flower Deity, and the Empress also tries to kill JM, so the Water Deity, i.e., JM’s father, tries to kill the Empress to protect JM, but he gets killed by the Fire Deity, who is protecting his mother. When I read that, I’m afraid my thoughts toward the Fire Deity turned rather sour.

JM didn’t have much feeling so his relationship with phoenix is unequal fr the very beginning. Night deity is such a hypocrite. I didn’t like him fr the moment he appeared in the novel:P I can smell a rat fr a mile away, lol. If you are not there yet, phoenix didn’t kill water deity. HurEr & I trusted him & never believed he can do such awful thing:P Although phoenix is rather bland & domineering, we still ship him bcos he is so nice to JM which you’ll find out later. Actually night deity isn’t that bad so he deserves your support:)

A big thank you to HuiEr for posting the spoiler bcos I can’t remember much of this novel except the OTP:P She is listening to FQH now so what is your next book, Mei? We strongly recommend HXY bcos it is our fav book:)

Another thank you to HuiEr for translating the 3rd epilogue for those who can’t understand Chinese & wait for xiaoyuer to finish translating:)

  24. HuiEr
    HuiEr February 12, 2013 at 10:39 am |

Woah Peanuts. Strong reaction to Night ey – You didn’t like him from the moment he appeared in the novel. Lol. But still, I sail on USS OTP (Sorry, Mei).

Translating is exhausting! Haha. I have now reached a new level of profound respect for people like Chancy and Xia0yuer who actually commit to translating entire books. Me – I’ll just stick to translating scenes to hook people into my favourite books.

Actually, because HS is written from first POV, we only see what Jin Mi feels. And given that she has had the unfeeling pill in her for most of the time, she can’t feel emotions the way normal people do. So, when interpreting everyone’s actions through her eyes, you need to amp up the volume on emotions.

Can’t say that Phoenix treats Jin Mi badly. I think objectively, he did a lot for her regardless of whether she realises it or not. At the most basic level, he spent time to actually train and help her in the art of meditation and self-cultivation. Let’s not forget, he’s really willing to literally attack his own mother to save her. And really, unlike Night, what he does is really sincere and wholeheartedly because it isn’t in his character to be calculative and manipulative.

  25. Mei
    Mei February 12, 2013 at 2:55 pm |

Haha, okay, Peanuts and HuiEr, given your stellar recommendations of the Fire Deity, I will give him another chance. 😉 It’s true that XMCCJRS is written from JM’s POV, so our understanding of the Fire Deity is rather colored by hers. I’ve just been suspicious whether he’s actually teaching her self-cultivation or taking advantage of her naïveté to get her to serve him, because underneath that Spirit-Sealing Hairpin she’s already an immortal and he’s been aware of that hairpin since the beginning.

Also, thanks so much for the spoiler, HuiEr! I admit, I still haven’t gotten past where xia0yuer’s translations end; I had to stop listening to the audiobook alone and am instead concurrently listening to the audiobook and reading the text, which is slow-going since I can’t be doing other things as I would if I were just listening to the audiobook alone. I had to switch to reading/listening to the book this way because I was just missing out on so much when listening alone (yes, even with xia0yuer’s translations in the back of my mind!). The way 电线 writes is very poetic and lyrical, but 90% of it also goes over my head. I also decided to start over from the beginning so that maybe by the time I get to where xia0yuer’s translations end, I’ll have gotten somewhat used to the way DX writes and can forge ahead by myself. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part.

HuiEr, do you have a blog? I’d love to read your scene translations. 🙂

  26. HuiEr
    HuiEr February 12, 2013 at 3:29 pm |

I love Fire, so… 😀 Tsk tsk, really Mei – you should give Fire another chance. He definitely took the excuse of teaching her in order to spend more time with her, but isn’t it normal? And the things that she does – most other female fairies will give an arm and a leg plus a couple of hundred years of lingli to be in her shoes. I mean, its really nothing too taxing – just to grind ink for him, follow him around and run some errands. Just take it that she’s paying off rent and tuition. I think it’s sweet that he wants to keep her around. Of course, she just think its bothersome.

I think listening to the audiobook with the actual e-book is a good idea to help you get a feel of the terms. That’s what I did with some of the more exciting parts so that I don’t get lost.

Lol – I just started a blog today. I did two scene translations – one is the 3rd epilogue for this book and the other is from Hua Xu Yin (which we have been trying to hook you in, no?) You can find it here: http://hui3r.wordpress.com/

  27. Mei
    Mei February 12, 2013 at 5:01 pm |

I think my current “aversion” to the Fire Deity is at least partly due to the fact that I’ve had to reread the beginning chapters multiple times now, so the Fire Deity’s domineering treatment of JM is currently strongly imprinted in my mind (and I’m probably also developing JM and Fire Deity fatigue), whereas at this point, I still don’t know much about the Night Deity, so I’m eager to find out more about what’s running beneath the surface. In fact, I’m a little worried that I’m developing XMCCJRS fatigue in general; this book is so much harder to get through than I’d anticipated!

As for HXY: Don’t worry, I actually was planning to pick this book up eventually! It’s just that I have some other books that I want to finish first (like XMCCJRS), and in order not to confuse myself, I prefer to finish books one at a time. Question, though, I heard HXY has a sad ending? In general, I avoid books that don’t have happy endings (Eastern Palace was more the exception than the norm), although I can sometimes be enticed by spoilers. 😉 (Well, more like spoilers let me know what to expect, so I can somewhat harden my heart in advance.)

  28. HuiEr
    HuiEr February 13, 2013 at 2:31 am |

The first few chaps are hard going, mostly because there’s a lot of world building so also go a lot of “invented words” and “things” that without the actual chinese characters in front of you, it’s hard to guess what they actually mean. But once you get the hang of it, you should be fine.

Well… About Night… Let’s just say he has his own plans, eh.

Re HXY: I think given the tone and set up for the book, the ending is a qualified Happily Ever After. I mean, the premise starts with a dead princess being animated by a magic pearl – you can only go so far to give them a happily ever after.

I love HEAs myself and I was pretty satisfied with the ending of HXY. 🙂

    SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

I adore Xu Feng and his passion for Jin Mi, but Ren Yu also tugs at my heartstrings. Yes, Ren Yu used Jin Mi to destroy Xu Feng but his heart really showed through during the twelve years after Ren Yu became the Heavenly Emperor. He took care of her during her hardest times wishing for nothing in return but that she remains by his side. I really don’t think Ren Yu’s love for Jin Mi is any less than Xu Feng’s, but it was Xu Feng whom she met first and with whom she spent over a century. I think love occurs in the right place, at the right time and with the right person. It just so happened that Xu Feng fulfilled all those criteria, while Ren Yu was too late.

I’m not going to add much by throwing in another positive review of this novel. I liked it a lot. I will, however, recommend one that gives off a very similar vibe. 沉香如屑 is also a fantasy novel with a cute, bumbling female lead who is clueless to the handsome, perfect male-lead’s love. Highly recommended if you liked Heavy Sweetness…

(Not sure if there is an audiobook, though. Sorry!)

I have had 沉香如屑 on my reading list since like forever… haha. I think one of the reasons I have not read it is precisely because I heard lots of people say it’s like Heavy Sweetness and I guess I’m “hoarding” it in the event I can’t find any good xianxia c-novels anymore!

Try giving 小江山 a try. It’s not xianxia, but there is a sprinkling of fantasy elements in there (although they play a small role only). This is one of my fave novels. I love this author, 沉筱之. She creates awesome male leads as well as 2nd male leads — handsome, caring, devoted, and a little 腹黑 in a good sense. Her female leads are the type I like: a little clueless but not stupid and not a Mary Sue. She has a very light-hearted writing style that’s easy to read, the plots are well thought out, and she usually shocks you by jerking out some tears from you. I sobbed like a baby reading 小江山, but thankfully, it has a HE. That is another signature thing of this author:always happy endings, which the escapist in me appreciates.

Hmm… I may actually post a summary of this or one of her other novels here on SSB. Someone, please go read her one of novels so I can chatter with you about it! If I haven’t read it, I’ll go do it just so we can discuss. I love this author and am surprised she isn’t more popular.

  47. decembi
    decembi April 10, 2014 at 6:16 am |

Oooh 小江山 sounds really good! I’ve never heard of the author to be honest hahaha. I think you should really post a summary! Actually the popularity of the books at SSB don’t really reflect the popularity in the c-novel world completely, part of it is if it is translated in english or people writing about it in english! 🙂 So she will probably get way more popular after you write about it!

I know they “mutually cultivate” in the epilogue and I thought they are really cute. I’m not sure but I think Jin Mi got some warp idea about multual cultivation from the God of Marriage so her concept of phyical intimacy is not quite the same as say normal folks.

As for wait I’ve read from you, I too agree that it seemed like Phoenix did take advantage of her. It surprised me though because when they were kissing last time he was able to stop and refrain himself when JM thought they would actually mutually cultivate. Can you provide some more spoilers as to what happened after he took away her innocence? How does Night find out and will there be another time where she will mutually cultivate with phoenix again? Will this story lead to an unexpected pregnancy? And last but not least what will happen to JM and Night’s engagement after this? If you can spoil me some more I would greatly appreciate it 😉

so here is my contribution to answer ur questions:

    SPOILERS ALERT

He was drunk and very emotionally unstable because he actually dragged her into the water with him and was pissed off. But when he tried to kiss her our dear clueless Jin mi jumps to the conclusion that he is trying to steal air from her so started to “fight back” for her air from his mouth! No wonder the poor guy got confused! And as things became more intense, she didnt process exactly what was happening until it wad actually happening. She initially tries to push him off but eventually didn’t know what she wanted him to ro anymore – stop or continue..

afterwards she was jusy keen to see if this mutual cultivation lead to any increase in her powers but felt kinda jipped because instead of increasing she thinks she may have gone backwards! Lol hence being annoyed with him and not wanting to see him when he comes to find her.

He takes as a “normal” person would and thought she was angry with him for what they did, he apologised but said he would do it again even if he wasnt drunk.

I kinda feel that even though she had her emotions blocked by the no-feeling pill, from the way she experiences this its as though her heart and body knows even when her mind doesnt because she doesnt react this way when say Night kisses her.

Thank you  Xia0yuer and Decembi for all ur hard work to bring this awesome story to us. I was like an insane addict after reading up to ur latest translation and had to revert to the vietnamese ebook to satisfy the obsession.

My vietnamese is limited and probably took 5 times as long as it should, but Phoenix just burns that scene up!

Decembi – reading this hawt scene is already intense, admire u for translating it! What I think is gonna be tough for u but an ‘uber blessing for our flutter hearts is that it not tje typical 1 paragraph “oh and he pulled her into his embrace and became his” or ” I took oit my hairpin and he got the hint” ala BBJX,this is like a doz paragraphs of kissing, sharing of breath under water, nibbling, wrestling and +++ (good luck Decembi, keep fighting! hehehe )

Though I have to say I much prefer their second mutual cultivation when she is free of the no-feeling pill.

you have done such an awesome job. I can only imagine the challenge to translate something like a story set in ancient times, written in Chinese and still make it flow, keeping true to the mood and meaning without losing the laughs and angst.
    ………………………….
Sadly I can’t seem to do anything in moderation, not sure where you are based but imagine the Cookie Monster on Sesame Street, but instead of cookies its stories! Lol

I kinda gobbled everything that’s been translated on Heavy sweetness in the last week and did it again…

In the last few months since watching BBJX which lead me to reading BBJX, DMY, YZG, LYF… All in translation of course, then reverting to the Viet versions to get a more word-for-word close up, man I was spent emotionally by Tong Hua … so THANK GOD you came along with your recommendations and translation for this! With the awesome “first meeting” and the promise of a happy ending, I was done for! This so eats the like of Twilight for breakfast! Teehee

I just started reading this. So far I’m on the Ren Yu + Jin Mi ship ^^ I tend to fall for the second male lead because they’re often mysterious and dark, aka Xiang Liu, Sesshomaru type of characters. I find it totally adorbs how clueless that Jin Mi is! Makes most of the humour in the novel so far, her, the carrot, and Yue Xia Xian Ren. I don’t know why the image of Kurosaki Ichigo (from Bleach) flashed across everytime I try to imagine Xu Feng, which is why he’s been turning me off XD

he3, its becoz Wang Huan maybe weak in martial arts but she has brain and courage.

“… I can only be myself. From birth to now, my one passion is food. You can call me a glutton, I am from the Greed Tribe afterall.”

… the Heavenly Empress thought Wang Huan was an amazing cook, but in truth, Wang Huan could care less whether Crown Prince Sun chose her or not. In her mind, this was an ideal exit to a difficult situation.

==> i’m secretly hoping that she is pro at tasting but bad at cooking 😀 😀

Hahahaha, eula, if you read chapter 10, you will see that you are quite correct. Though, Wang Huan isn’t bad at cooking… just different haha.

Thank you again for the support! Will try my best to work on Sun’s Dark Love & Heavy Sweetness <3

“Beneath this crow’s lower abdomen was a very strange thing, I squeezed it a little, and it was somewhat soft, somewhat hard.”

    Hi, this is squinty here.
I’ve decided to stop haunting decembi’s site and start using my brain lol. Your audiobook link doesn’t work for me so I’ll try another site, but is the audiobook any good. Specifically, does it go into the (ahem) details?

After checking through the spoilers here, I realized. Seriously? There was an underw mutual cultivation scene? But I read (and reread) all of decembi’s translations!! How come I missed it????

Does anyone know of an updated link for the audiobook? The current one does not work. Thanks in advance!

Sorry! I don’t know how to use audiobooks so I can’t help you there.

The second epilogue about Phoenix and Ji Mi’s son reveals his true form is a egret,(much to Ji Mi’s annoyance). She would have preferred him to be a Hawk, falcon or maybe a phoenix coz egrets are sissy water birds.Phoenix doesn’t care that his son is a sissy water bird and names him after the shop Ji Mi lived in as a mortal. So their son is half Ji Mi’s element and half Phoenix’s species (bird).

Ji Mi doesn’t like it (at first) that her son is a egret/heron but it could have been worse. He could have turned out to be a duck !

Did Pheonix cheat on Ji Mi? I got to the part where Pheonix brought home women and got out hours later with messy clothes… 🙁
