如若有你一生何求 can be translated as “If I have you, what more could I ask for in this life?” However, there is also a play on words in this title. The name of the female lead in the story is 叶一生 Ye Yisheng, so her given name is actually the 5th and 6th characters in the title. If you think of it in that context, you could translate it as “If I have you, what more could I, Yisheng ask for?” Also, there is a play on sounds. Yisheng also sounds like 医生, which means doctor. So, if you were to just read the title out loud without lookin at the characters, it could sound like, “If I have you, what more could (this) doctor ask for?” The male lead, 宋安辰 Song Anchen is a doctor.

Lol. Sorry. You were probably expecting a short answer.

Anyways, if you liked Silent Separation, I would recommend 如若有你一生何求. They are similar in many aspects: 2 people who loved one another at a young age, separated by circumstance for many years with many regrets. The girl believes they cannot go back to what they had once had and not even sure if the boy loves or loved her, but the boy’s heart never changed never accepted another girl all those years and when they meet again, he tries to win her back. The boy is the “perfect man” — handsome, smart, the best at what he does — while the girl is just average and a little bumbling. There’s even plot elements that are similar, like a very unromantic marriage initiated by the guy to make her his. This one does have (quite) a few more bed scenes (LOL), although nothing really explicit and actually sometimes quite funny. It’s sweet and a HE.

Yes, this novel looks like a blatant ripoff of silent separation from the book cover, title, character names, plot etc. If people enjoy it, so be it as there are real and fake LV bags in the world, lol. If the author did not copy any wordings from silent then should be ok.

Alright. I was the one to mention the similarities with Silent Separation, so now I will go ahead and describe the differences.

I’m normally one to turn my nose up at copycat anything. I read this story right after Silent, but for some reason, despite catching the similarities right away, was not turned off by it. Yes, there are several plot elements that are the same, which I mentioned way up above. Consciously or not, the author has taken a similar idea to Silent Separation and used it as a frame to create this story. However, this novel stylistically feels so different from Silent Separation. Despite being a relatively easy read, the first half or so of Silent is pretty emotionally intense. Gu Man’s beautiful descriptions of inner emotions, struggles, regrets, etc are what made Silent Separation, story riddled with so many plot devices you couldn’t help saying, “WTH?! This too?! What else can happen to this poor girl?” still so captivating and memorable.

In contrast, If I Have You has more realistic situations that crop up and a lighter, more humorous tone. No betrayal (perceived or otherwise) ever happened between them, so there is no intense conflict between the two leads like there was in Silent. Song Anchen is less “moody” (for lack of a better word at the moment… Sorry. Fried brain right now!) than He Yichen. Much of the story is about how he is trying to win Yisheng’s heart, but her low self-esteem just can’t believe this boy she has loved all her life could possibly return that love.

Character-wise, the supporting characters armor fleshed out in this novel whereas Silent really on focused on the leads. The second male lead, Yan Heng, is very likable and the sacrifices he makes for Yisheng makes him more memorable to his Silent “equivalent,” Ying Hui. You will grind your teeth at the “third person” that causes conflict in he leads’ relationship, but in the end, she is a victim too.

So, if I were to fairly compare, Silent Separation to me is the better novel. Gu Man’s writing is able to pull the readers into her characters’ hearts and minds and makes you reflect on the story. Hence, Silent has reached “classic” status and has such a cult following. This novel is a fun read. It is easy to follow, is very sweet, has characters you will like, and is oh so romantic in many ways. Look past the similarities and you can find the differences, and there are many. However, if you really are turned off by how it appears to be riding on the success of the other, that is understandable, and go ahead and set it down. I have other sweet and romantic novels to recommend.

And so, Hoju continues her trend of long posts. 😉

Paragraph 4, first sentence should read, “Character-wise, the supporting characters are more fleshed out in this novel…”

Guilty as charged, been such a beezeebee lately. Actually wanted to help out Pm but not at homebase right now. But, good job, Pm, for contributing so many books lately…..clap–clap–clap….

And yes, Shifu, I must admit that I have so many new guys all closeted up that i feel embarrassed….blush–blush–blush….

    Oky…I’m done:)

    Thots of mine…..spoilers ahead too……

This book is not really similar to silent after all…….tho some parts and plots sound alike…like separation of 2 young love birds….separated by a step sister/adopted sis in silents case….and having a second male lead who also loves the female lead…..but the differences are rather huge…….this one includes a little epilogue of their kid….which is so cute.

Although I like yan heng…..and I guess even if yi sheng did fall in love with hi,..but there is no way they can be together anyway…..so well…yan heng just has his family to blame I guess……

And I DO NOT in the least feel sorry for the annoying Lin ruo Han…..everything that she experienced is all her own doing an no one else…..but if anyone was to blame, I shd think that Xiang he guy is to be blamed…coz he bungled up his job…….but she was the own who wanted to stick herself in the relationship of the 2 lovebirds…and did nasty things too….and she mAde herself out to be the victim and how yi sheng stole Chen an from her…when clearly chen an was never her boyfriend neither did he even like her……so well….in my opinion…I dun feel sorry for her even tho she experienced that event…..coz she wanted to rough up Chen an….and she was in his room….

But I guess I can understand yi shengs feelings of low self esteem….not pretty nor smart…..how to hold on to an outstanding man…….

I agree with Pm. The mood in this book is so much lighter than Silent Separation. This book is funny and enjoyable but not my type. I like the more angst plot line. This book has some potential but the conflicts resolved too quickly for my taste. To me, Silent Separation was okay, not great. There’s just too many unresolved conflict in it. i wish the author could expand more on the characters and plot.

    Hi Peanuts,

Sorry to be a bother, but once again, can you help me find the Viet title to this story? I try searching on Google with the Chinese title but nothing pop. Thank you.

I’ve already read Silent Separation, so I want to try this one too to see how similar the two stories are.

I just finished this book with the help of google translate and reading it side by side with the orignal chinese text. Although the plot is quite similiar to Silent Separation, it still quite different as well. I think this novel is lighter and has more funny scenes compare to Silent Separation. There’s really no point me into typing anything else, as the comments above already summaries what I wanted to say about the novel. Still a good read.

Just finish reading this book. It was entertaining but definitely not as memorable as Silent Separation. I really like the second male lead though, I hope he will meet a great girl later.

When I read this novel I didn’t think abt Silent Separation but this book 终生兽用. (The leads grew up together, have feelings for each other, 419, separation, the girls lost the baby…)

Sometimes it’s funny. LOL at her answer to his friend when he was busy changing the bulb. Or the priest’s reaction at the wedding XD

I just feel sometimes Yi Sheng is annoying because she keeps rejecting him. I know he is too perfect for her but she should at least try to trust him.

Song An Chen, another guy beside YC who can live like a monk for 6 years+ Of course, a real monk doesn’t drink and smoke like these two.

Aaah forgive me Peanuts, I read this book when you’re still on holiday (I feel like cheating lol). bongsd approves, you should read this novel.

Hi there, I just finished the book too..and I agree with both Mai and Bongsd. I completely understand the angst between Mosheng and YiChen in Silent separation but is very frustarated at Yisheng toward AnChen here…It was so clear he only has eyes for her even when they were young..all the males characters in this book are great.. but there is only 1 decent woman, JiXiang.. YiSheng is too dumb as the female lead and her guilt about sleeping with AC twice is beyond me. Come on, gal!!!!!! She was supposed to have committed both crime under the influence of alcohol. But seriously YS, how drunk can he be if he mange to sent you back to your room both time!!!! I bang head on table..Is there anyone who feel that HeJin like Yisheng too? He is the guy from their sch day who become the boss of that mall.YanHang is a wonderful 2nd lead…. his initial involvement started from his guilt at what his family has done to YiSheng’s Dad and what happen to YS subsequently..his protection is so sweet and basically take care of everything for her…If only he doesn’t need to disappear so often in the book, I feel he is equally outstanding as AC. Did the book mention if the other woman survive the surgery???
