Fake Slackers 伪装学渣 / 伪学渣装 by 木瓜黄 Mu Gua Huang (HE)

After class placement were decided, the school’s two infamous ‘problem youth’ not only shared the same class, but the same desk.

They’re clearly good at studies, but pretend to be slackers. Fakers from head to toe who just keep walking farther down the path of their performance.

Hear on the grapevine about the two big brothers who always fight over the last place in class.

Basically, this is a serious comedy. About the little matters of growing up.

  • This is another popular read in the "Boys Love" genre will not be unfamiliar with "Fake Slackers". As explained / foreshadowed in the summary to Fake Slackers, this novel is a "serious comedy" which details the escapades of two high schools students, the bright and exuberant, bubbly and joyful He Zhao and the aloof and cool (and secretly warm-hearted) Xie Yu who meet during their second year of High School and, as life would have it, end up becoming desk mates, and eventually, through the process of getting to know each other better, becoming lovers. The relationship is developed gradually and with much hilarity, and it is lovely to see our characters set in a warm, angst-free high school setting - yes, this novel is not overly ambitious (not in terms of setting, or in terms of plot development, or character tropes), but it is great as a light read with memorable, lovely characters.

As the title suggests, although both He Zhao and Xie Yu rank at the bottom (and second-to-last) for every single exam which they sit for, they are, in actuality, true blue geniuses who have little to no difficulty resolving each and every single examination question flung at them. However, due to various reasons, both He Zhao and Xie Yu have decided to maintain a "dumb" / "unintelligent" facade, and are content to achieve such horrifying, jaw-dropping scores. (One hilarious incident was when both He Zhao and Xie Yu were required to submit an essay on "Silhouette" for the examination, and He Zhao started the essay with "I think my silhouette is especially suave", before morphing the remainder of the essay into a series of praises and boasts about himself (and his silhouette)). That is not to say, however, that He Zhao and Xie Yu are content with their partners being so "unintelligent", and one of the running gags in the novel is Xie Yu's dreams / imaginations of He Zhao future as an excavator driving farmhand, and their (discreet) attempts to help each other with their grades. As the novel progresses, He Zhao and Xie Yu eventually discover the truth about each other, and are able to slowly help each other to overcome their innermost complexes (which served as the main driver for the "dumbing down" of their intelligence). All in all, a fairly easy read, with lovable, striking characters, and is well deserving of its good repute in the Boys Love Genre.
