The story takes place in Kong Sang Continent, and revolves around the tumultuous love story between Zhu Yan, princess of the Chi Yi Tribe and Shi Ying, a royal prince. Shi Ying’s mother was framed, and he was banished to Jiu Yi Mountain to cultivate.

Originally focused on nothing but cultivation, he began to develop romantic feelings for Zhu Yan, his disciple. However because of their relationship as teacher and student, both of them do not voice out their feelings.

Fate also stands in their way when they stood on opposite sides in political struggle and undergo life and death situations. However, they eventually put aside their issues, and work together hand-in-hand to protect Kong Sang Continent.

This is the prequel to the Mirror series.

  • wow!!! didn't know there was more books in the Yunhuang universe aside from the 2 series and the short stories! Definitely going to read this one. Another teacher-student romance. Still can't get over the tragic one between Po Jun and Mu Yuan. So sad. This one at least sound like a HE

  • Please don't repost this elsewhere. I read the novel several months ago and can't remember all the details.

    [spoiler]
The novel's title is named after the hairpin that Shi Ying (SY) gives Zhu Yan (ZY). It's a love token given from the emperor to the empress and passed down from generation to generation. When SY gives ZY the hairpin, it's his way of telling her he loves her, but she doesn't know it.

In the novel, SY carries an umbrella and only when he flights does the umbrella turns into a sword. As for the hairpin, I think it can turn into a sword, and this is what ZY used to kill SY.

The gist of it is SY grew up in a mountain and trained to become the successor of the highest priest of the land. There's a prophecy that says SY will be killed by the first female he sees before he turns 18. He meets ZY before he turns 18, but he couldn't bear to kill her, even knowing she could kill him later.

ZY convinces SY to let her become his disciple. During their time together, assassins almost kill SY, and ZY risks her life to save him. Because of this incident, he falls in love with her. However, he doesn't tell her because he knows that she is afraid of him since she is lazy and he is a strict teacher. He asks her what is the type of husband she wants to marry. ZY is in love with a merman, but to please SY, she says she wants to marry someone like SY. This causes a huge misunderstanding for SY because he thinks she likes him.

ZY begins to get her period, officially becoming a woman, so it's no longer appropriate for her to stay with SY. She doesn't understand why he tells her to leave and is really hurt.

Fast forward some years and they meet again. By reading the stars, SY forsees that a merman will destroy his kingdom, so he wants to kill the merman before the prophecy comes true. SY mistakenly thinks the merman that ZY loves is the one in the prophecy, so he kills him. When ZY sees that SY killed the guy she loves, she wants to kill SY for revenge. SY lets her kill him because he doesn't want her to live in bitterness and obsessed with revenge. After ZY stabs SY, she realizes too late that she loves him. SY's teacher gives her a spell to save SY, but for the spell to work, she has to give up half of her lifespan for him.

After SY is saved, he undergoes a horrendous process that almost kills him in order to leave the priesthood. He returns to the capital and becomes the crown prince. The rule is the crown prince has to marry someone from another clan, not the one ZY is from. ZY admits to SY that she loves him.

There's a final fight between SY, ZY and an evil guy who is trying to overthrow the royal family. This guy is like an older version of SY (I forgot how they're related), but SY and ZY win in the end. SY lets his nephew become the emperor while he goes off to live in anonymity with ZY. The end.
