You’re Beautiful When You Smile (Falling Into Your Smile) 你微笑时很美 by 青浼 Qing Mei (HE)

“Yao Yao, if you were me, what would you do to ensure that you are able to maintain a good relationship with a boyfriend who is an e-sports gamer?”

Tong Yao mulled over the question for some period of time, before answering in all seriousness –

If it’s me, I would simply opt not to enter a relationship with an e-sports gamer. If I had the patience to maintain such a relationship, I would be better off channelling my energy and effort into applying for Tsinghua University or Peking University.

  • I've stumbled across this novel after having recently re-read Fish Playing While Trapped in a Secret Room by Mo Bao Fei Bao (and embarking on a search for other e-sports novels). Now, different from Fish Playing While Trapped in a Secret Room, this novel focuses rather heavily on the game itself, which is King of Glory. As I'm neither (a) a gamer, nor (b) an avid reader of e-sports novels, it took me some time to familiarise myself with the game set-up and the gaming lingo which was utilised in the novel.

Having said, despite my reservations about the game, I did enjoy this novel very much! The set-up is fairly simple, with our female lead, Tong Yao, being invited to play as a professional e-sports player in an established e-sports team. It is there that she meets our male lead, Lu Si Cheng, who possesses a witty sense of sarcasm, a hilarious poisonous tongue, good looks, and a huge amount of wealth to boot. The two gradually fall in love (no surprises there) through their daily interactions as teammates. The romance could arguably be classified as a slow growing one, with the actual affirmation of the relationship only taking place halfway into the novel, but little matter, as the daily interactions between the two leads, and within the entire e-sports team, gives us more than sufficient hilarity and laughs.

Something I did like about the novel though, was how our male lead never shied away from his responsibilities as team leader - despite his feelings for our female lead, he was always ready to act impartially (for the best interests of the team), and reprimand our female lead whenever her rashness and reckless attitude called for it. It is refreshing to see such level-headed male leads when most romance novels nowadays push for a 'blinded-by-romance' type of male lead who would seemingly do all brainless things for the female lead.

  • I actually started playing the game (not the one in the book, which seems to be League of Legends, but the one in the drama, which seems to be a PC version of the mobile game called Onmyoji Arena). I really like this book too, I've read it several times and I really enjoy the gaming aspects even though I'm only a casual gamer myself
