Love love love this book! The female lead is smart, level-headed, consistent and practical, one of my favourite kinds. Sometimes, female characters engage in stereotypical power play with male characters to establish themselves as 'strong' females, Qu Qing Ju however uses her wits to see the world, people and schemes around her as they are, and either go with the flow, or come up with smart ways to circumvent them. Case in point: she correctly perceived her mother-in-law as someone intelligent, and hence she decided to play dumb, since smart mother-in-laws typically don't like too-smart of a daughter-in-law. While she exasperated her mother-in-law, she also lowered her mother-in-law's guard and gained favour with her.
The male lead is someone who is also shrewd and calm, having to survive the imperial politics and engage in the power struggle for the throne. It wasn't love at first sight for He Heng and Qu Qing Ju, especially since both are more practical than romantic people. But their gradually deepening love was very very sweet. Especially the ending in the last epilogue! The flashes of humour in the novel also made me LOL.
I will end this brief review with the following extract:
"Since He Heng ascended the throne, other than when others were around, privately he never addressed himself with his formal title. He treated her just like when they were still at the Duan Prince residence, and was instead getting closer. She wasn't a pessimistic person, so she didn't become afraid because of this. From certain perspective, she enjoyed how well He Heng treated her, and she would treat him just as well. If He Heng genuinely had feelings for her, she would be happy. If he had no feelings for her, she would not be broken hearted. Instead, she had the confidence that before she ended her own life, she would successfully sabotage him."

The multi wives thing won't detract from the story as HH becomes absurdly faithful (for the times). It's a gloriously beautiful story in how a man with absolute power and intelligence and a woman who is insanely practical in nature find love.
