The Shang clan rose to glory by serving the dragon, producing Empresses and filling the court with high-ranking kin. But in a single night, the tide turned. Her brother was exiled; her niece, the Empress, was deposed; and the illustrious house of Shang saw its pillars crumble.
In the palace, the onlookers watched the fire from a distance, sneering: “The Shang’s have nothing left but one young ‘Old Auntie.’ This time, their imperial relationship is surely at an end.”
Deep within the ranks of the new palace candidates, Yixing trembled. “If I really can’t manage to be the Empress,” she whispered to herself, “I suppose I could settle for being the Imperial Noble Consort…”
Yixing’s childhood nickname was Kan’er (Threshold). Even the grandest names often have a humble alias trailing behind. Years later, a line of poetry became the most popular refrain in the Forbidden City: “My home leans against the green peaks, while the little threshold rests upon the clear river.”
There was no hidden mystery to its fame. It was simply because the Emperor’s own childhood name happened to be Qingchuan (Clear River).
