At the beginning of the 20th century, Jiang Ying, the top singer at a local club schemes to marry the wealthy Du Jingchuang in order to get her revenge but she becomes entangled with his son who is also not who he seems.
As Jiang Ying attempts to seduce wealthy businessman Du Jingchuang for vengeance, his son Du Xunyu becomes suspicious of her. However, he too is also almost exposed to be a fake son. The stepmother and stepson living under the same roof remain wary of each other, yet they gradually see the return of an old friend in the other. The two who were meant to walk the lonely road of vengeance are no longer alone yet their enemy Du Jingchuang is secretly keeping a watchful eye.

I've glanced thru the non-VIP chapters of the novel and it is nothing like the drama. Even the name of the protagonists are different. I guess they are only adapting the general plot or a small part of the novel. The novel is quite draggy and not as interesting as the drama so kudos to the scriptwriter for making the drama so much better and suspenseful.
I also have to sing praises of the director. He gives this B grade drama a stylish feel, like you are watching a Wong Kar Wai's movie lol. Also, he tries to end each episode on a cliff-hanger, making you hungry for more :) On a limited budget, the costumes and props are actually pretty nice, not cheap or fake looking. The songs and mood of the era are also spot on. As for the acting, they are adequate and the chemistry believable even though the FL is abt 4 yrs older than the ML. I find some parts kind of romantic and even sexy with the clothes on lol. The ML did take his clothes off but it is not what you think :P
The plot is typical but it has been repackaged into something compact and entertaining. The production crew really knows what the audience wants, all the dog blood stuff like stepmum, revenge, fake son, fake death, childhood sweetheart, forbidden love, reunion after separation etc. you name it, they've it :P I think everyone who is involved in this short drama has put a lot of thoughts and heart into it. Hence as an audience, I've enjoyed my journey with them. If you compare this to some well-known republican dramas, you may find this lacking. But for a low budget short webdrama, it has exceeded my expectation. It'll only take abt 4 to 5 hrs of your time, so I highly recommend you to give it a try.
