Heehee, I am interested in this book because I read there will be a movie & drama version coming out next year. Hopefully it is because it is very good. Actually the storyline sounds rather cliche. I browse reading forums to get an idea of what books to read, and this author is very highly rated. Among her books, this is probably the most popular one so I did gave in to temptation last Sunday and read it. Only had time for the beginning and end, and kind of skipped the middle. Ahhh, no time due to starting school.
My opinion is that this is a very good story. Highly recommended! Will definitely go back to read it more carefully when there’s time. Not all her books have a happy ending so although I want to read more of her works, I’m hesitant to check them out.
The author’s writing style and the way she sets up the plot is solid. This story has a Cinderella feel, but ZW’s romantic struggles are realistic enough that readers can identify with her. Between the 2 guys, I like LJ alot and am satisfied with the ending. I admit I’m a bit bias since LJ features prominently in the beginning and end of the story (the parts I read) while CXZ’s relationship with ZW occurs in the middle of the story, the part I skipped. But there’s enough info about CXZ in what I read to make me dislike him.
My favorite part is at the very end when ZW talks with LJ’s ex-girlfriend at the beach. The ex says that men are very cruel in that they only treasure the person they love and want to marry while other women can be easily discarded no matter how much they’ve done for the men. For ex: LJ can easily break up with his ex b/c he doesn’t love her even if she has done a lot for him. This sounds harsh, but I feel it’s usually true in real life. If only as women, all of us can be in ZW’s position and on the receiving end of the affection. But there are some women who are forced into a position similar to LJ’s ex, which is very unfortunate.

This author is very highly rated from the book discussion forums/reviews I’ve read. The only book by this author I’ve read completely is 原来你还在这里, and I enjoyed it. I find the main guy’s obsession of the main girl very romantic. However in real life, I hope I’ll never meet someone crazy like him.
Other works I know of and want to read are 晨昏, 山月不知心底事, 我在回忆里等你, and 许我向你看, but I’m holding them off b/c I read the endings aren’t happy. Before I read them, I have to prepare myself first. There’s one more called 浮世浮城, but not sure of the ending. In terms of happy ending, I think only the 2 I’ve read. My opinion so far is that I like the author’s writing style and the way she sets up the plot/characters. She’s not as funny as Gu Man/TQGZ, but there are enough humor and cute moments to keep the story from being dry. What is preventing me from doing a marathon of her works is the ending to some of her novels.
Oh, out of the 6 books you mentioned, I only manage to find 2 audiobooks:( Hey, the Viet translations are done by fans or professional? How come there are more Viet translations than audiobooks for most of the books you mentioned not only for this author? Why, why, tell me why:P? Translations are slow & hard work compared to audiobooks.
Have some self-ctrl like me:P If you finish all the good books, you’ll end up dry for the rest of the yr or the next yr, haha…We’ll read a book with happy ending by this author together when you finish school. I think this author is definitely my style as I like a balance book with enough angst & humour. I don’t even mind a sad ending if it is a good one. I like it so far, like her personality. I want to get the gist of this writer’s style before I read 浮世浮城 which is likely more heavy of a story. I don’t mind when a novel is not as funny as TQGZ, I appreciate soul filling novel more.

This author is very popular, on the same level as Gu Man/TQGZ or even more? Hence I was able to easily locate the Chinese titles. All the works I’ve listed are done by publishing houses in Vietnam so the translations are done professionally. Then the books are released as paperbacks. I want to buy them, but the shipping is the same as the book. Meh, I’m too poor right now. My rich husband, where are you?! XDXD
I think the author is currently working on something new called 蚀心者, and I pray, PRAY! then ending will be happy so I can read it. I like her writing style and want to read her books, but I really have a difficult time with sad endings. Unfortunately, this author doesn’t shy away from a sad ending if she deems it necessary.
ZW chooses LJ in the end so def happy ending for me. But some of the reviews I read deems the ending more bittersweet b/c it seems like she loves CXZ more? I have no idea since I didn’t have time to read the middle part, which was about their college romance so have no idea how deep their relationship was. I only read how ZW & CZW met, and it was pretty hilarious.
I’m listening to radiodrama, it’s really actually just a better audiobook. Radio Dramas usually only 5 eps and no narrations just dialogues. The guy’s voice is very nice and I like the girl voice also. Yah, Lin Jing gege is also nice, anything with gege sounds nice. ^_^
I’ve decide to stop reading 且试天下 for time being and read this one along with Chong Zi. 且试天下 takes longer to post up because she puts extra effort into the sound effects. I’ll wait until she has a few more chaps up or maybe wait till it’s all done so I can marathon? I’ve stopped at a pause-able chapter where it won’t effect the experience if I stopped reading and pick up later.
I can’t download the radiodrama which I know is always better:( Anyway I am downloading the audiobook. Will reread the radiodrama online if this book is to my liking.

Oh Chancy, you should give this book another try. I tried to get into this book a few times but failed:( Then yesterday, I got bored with all the Mary Sue characters in other audiobooks, I decided to give this one last try bcos of all the hype. Once I got pass a few chapters, I am on the road of no return:(
On the surface, this story is so similar to many others I’ve come across or listened to. What elevate this book to the top is the author’s narration & description skills. She develops her characters well & make me feel for them. Her characters are as real as you can get. They don’t stay stagnant. I feel like I am growing up with them. I share their happiness & pains. Oh, Ms author, I like you. Although at times you make me wet my pillow & tug my heart, I feel that my life has been enriched with all these experiences.
It is not all angst & tears. She does know how to use subtle humour like when the girl went on a match making date, the 1st question she asked the guy is ‘Do you like USA?’. This is bcos 2 guys have abandoned her for USA:P Her style is not fluffy & sometime quite heavy as you need to think & savour what she wrote. Yet, she does manage to capture & captivate me with her words. I feel like she is the Tong Hua of modern novel, able to squeeze a lot of tears from me:(
I have not finished this book but I honestly do not like either of the guy. I agree with Weiwei that LJ gege is such a coward to leave for US without keeping in touch. Even if they can’t be lovers, they can still be friends. I feel that what he has done to her is really cruel. She worked hard to get to a uni which is near his uni & has high hope of them spending time together. Then he just left quietly without saying good bye:(
As for CXZ, he is even worse ! I’ve to state upfront, I strongly dislike his personality. I don’t like ambitious, aloof, snooty & cold guys. For me, he is a jerk. They did share the best part of their life together happily but I doubt they can have a happy ending. I am glad she realised those are happy memories to be cherished & can’t be recaptured. Btw, I dislike CXZ so much to the extend I skipped a few of the chapters of them dating. I can’t wait for LJ gege to rtn. Actually I feel CXZ is more of a leading role than LJ gege bcos he spent the most time with Weiwei & we know more abt him. He seems more real to me. Inspite of what I wrote abt CXZ, I do understand some ppl might ship him but not me !!!

I fell in love with the drama when the girl slapped that guy & asked him to knee down for forgiveness. The bonus is both of them look so compatible & good looking although they are not famous. LJ gege repesents youthful idealism whereas CXZ represents unforgettable reality. It seems CXZ has a lot of supporters but I just can’t like him no matter how 3 dimensional a character he is. Actually I find it difficult to ship either of them as one left to escape & the other to pursue a better future. But is it wrong to be selfish when the future is at stake? How long should one wait? What if you waited & he changed? What if he really come back but you’ve changed? Oh, all these are so complicated. I wonder if I’ll feel differently abt CXZ if Hu Ge or Wallace is in that role, haha…

Yes, Weiwei said he is such a coward to run away. Even if it is impossible for them to be lover, can at least keep in touch & be friends. Weiwei loves CXZ more bcos they dated for quite sometime, shared many memories together & it is the most impressionable & happiest time of their life. With LJ gege, it is more like childhood crush or love for a big brother as she is too young then. Actually I find LJ gege’s character rather bland, the goody type. Those chapters I listened to last night are quite sweet focusing mainly on Wei Wei & LJ gege. They made me sleep at 4am:( The only sad bit is on Wei Wei’s friend Yuan Yuan. I feel so bad for her.Among the 6 girls, I forgot what they called themselves in college, the most fortunate one is Wei Wei.
Since I am finishing this book, I’ve doubts on the casting of the drama & movie. In the novel, LJ gege is abt 5 yrs older than Wei Wei & maybe CXZ but Hang Geng doesn’t look older than Mark Chao. I don’t fancy Mark so I am glad he is CXZ so I’ll never ship him:P I don’t know who is the actress so no comment. My ideal casting will be Yang Mi as ZW, Feng Shao Feng as LJ & HXM as CXZ. If this is filmed 10 ys ago then Zhao Wei as ZW, Alec Su as LJ & Chen Kun as CXZ. The description of ZW is exactly like Zhao Wei, the emphasis being having a pair of big eyes.
As for the drama, I wonder why the author feels Yuan Hong is LJ. Maybe bcos of Legend of the Condor Heroes, I feel he is more suitable as CXZ, someone who is proud & insecured like Yang Kang. Whereas Hu Ge should be Lin Jing gege since he reminds me of Guo Jing as they even share the same name. Of course LJ gege is smarter:P Both of them can fight over Liu Shi Shi:P But she’ll need a pair of bigger eyes:P I think she is not suitable as Wei Wei during college days but okay once she enters the workforce.

Hope you don’t mind me intruding, I just skimmed through the comments and I have a few of my own I just want to spill out there.
I love both guys in the sense they are both not perfect. I don’t need to have a definite OTP to ship in my reads so I was actually quite determined she won’t end up with either one of them…when each one of the guys commemorate a part of her youth and her growing up but she didn’t stay 18, or 23 forever, she keeps evolving.
I don’t see LJ leaving as cowardice at all. He was all but early twenties and hit hard with that scandal with their parents. I actually see him knowing ZW more than she does at that specific time. ZW may said she would be able to be friends with him, but she was so young, naive and scarily too optimistic not having a worry of the world. She has no clue of what the real world is like living in her protected cocoon. He’s much more pragmatic than her and have a much better vision of all the mess they have to deal with if they carry on without a way out of their parents’ sticky situation. Afterall he’s half of the relationship as well, and I give him the respect of his choice of not being able to befriend her after what transpired. Afterall his Mom is the ‘victim’ bearing an unhealing wound she’s blaming ZW’s mom and ZW, but it’s another story in ZW’s case…he’ll have a much harder time trapped in the middle than ZW. IF he didn’t make such a devastating clean break with her without softening the impact, he knows and I can bet on it too she would have pursued him like she did Chen, without the capacity of knowing what love really is. What her feelings towards LJ since a child is not love, it’s infatuation, it’s fangirling. There is a one-sidedness to it in the sense she has put LJ on a pedestal to idolize, he can do no wrong but OTOH she can’t be in a relationship with him where they r equals…like she can eventually do with Chen, and also LJ didn’t give her any ‘hardships’ to give it more thought. For Chen though, she clearly is aware of his thought and reaction, she thinks through what her action will provoke in him, at first intentionally annoying him to a terrifying degree, but later on, even knowing exactly how he’s turned off by her shenanigans, she carries on with it knowing she doesn’t really have a choice not to, even if he hates her guts, she can’t deny her expression of love towards the guy. I actually gained respect for her in her relationship with Chen. She is very ballsy to me, I wouldnt have the tenacity and shamelessly to carry on, but more so I don’t think I’m selfless and my ego will be in the way of loving someone other than myself so devastatingly.

Yes i also applaud Wei Wei’s courage to pursue Chen, if i got a guy that pissed at me and than find out the reason behind my actions was that i liked him, i would.definitely different my self a hole to hide in. Wouldn’t be able.to facebhim after realizing my own feelings. I also liked what she said about finding someone she likes and not someone who likes her.

Unfortunately Alec is too old for this sort of role:( 10 yrs or more ago, Alec will be perfect as LJ. I wonder why ZW doesn’t cast HXM as LJ or Chen. I feel that Hang Geng is too young & untested for such an in depth character. I read bcos his coy invested in this project. If HXM is Chen, I think I’ll ship him, lol. No casting has satisfied me before so I gonna listen to the audiobook & imagine my LJ & Chen:) This one has decent audiobook & radioplay so you should continue listening:)

I’m back (after being MIA for so long)!!! And I’ve given myself a break before the second volume of Once Promised and started on Lost Youth. And Zheng Wei is SO annoying I just want to slap some sense into her most of the time. I really, really like Ruan Ruan and the whole angle of youth and first love is light and doesn’t grate on my feelings as much. I don’t like either CXZ or LJ at this point and my biggest question is: why doesn’t she like Xu Kai Yang?! I’d marry him in a minute (or less)! I’m less than a quarter in, and it isn’t super engaging, but something not as stressful and didn’t from my super pressure cooker school, so it’s nice.
And I quoted you, chancy, because I did watch NToG! I’m sorry I didn’t see the post until now. The storyline is so romantic that it covered up for the kind of awkward acting from the two leads in the beginning but the last ten episodes were so weird. Actually the whole drama is kind of quirky, but the story line is so sweeping and dreamlike. I want to read a novel that’s that sweeping and romantic!

Many ppl has done a lot of foolish things in their youth:) Yah, I also like Yuan Yuan more than Wei Wei but later in the book, I sort of got a bit annoyed with her. Don’t want to give u spoiler but u might need a hanky. The 2 male leads are not exactly lovable but they are written quite realistically. I doubt you can find Ah Mo, that guy in NToG in real life but I am sure you’ve or will meet ppl like LG & CXZ.
If you want sweeping & romantic novel, you should have read XYW’s Original/So You’re Still Here as you’ll most probably like the male lead. Unfortunately no audio book:( The male leads in Wedding Night, Neighbour and Embrace are also very swoon worthy but again no audio book, sob sob..
I know!! I really wanted to read You’re Still Here, Wedding Night, Neighbour and Embrace but I just don’t have the time in between my classes and work. So I can only live off audiobooks for now until I hit break!

I think there’s only a little link. Like Wei Wei introduced Xiao Bei to the main guy inside 许我向你看 who works at the same law firm as Lin Jing. Does Xiao Bei even appear again in the later part of the book? I think with this book, I just need to get past the college days, I’m sure I’ll like it more after she gets into the career part of her life.
Peanuts is kind of getting tired of ebooks:( Oh, someone pls read all these good books to me as I bet they’ll sound a lot better if my Cgege read them to me, lol. Most of XYW’s books characters are mentioned or know each other in another book. They are all one big family, haha…
Btw, I found out XYW’s new book has kidnapping as part of the plot. Wonder if the leads got kidnapped so being confned together, they start to like each other? Hey Lidge, are you reading? Are you excited at the prospect of being kidnapped by her new book, lol?
Haha, I don’t mind marrying CXZ if he loves me as much as he loves Wei Wei & he is as good looking as how XYW described him:P That is if I am a rich girl with a powerful family.
The movie will be released on 26th April. I don’t like the trailer because it looks & feels so different from the book, might as well don’t buy the copyright:( I don’t think I’ll be watching as I am not keen on the leads. I am putting all my hope on the drama version, hopefully maybe with Yuan Hong or someone I like. In the meantime, you can listen to the theme song fresh from the oven by Faye Wong. I find it ok only.
I just finished this book a few days ago. XWY has done great job in writing this book. I like love story between ZW and CXZ because it’s beautiful. However, I personally like the ending. Zheng Wei eventually chooses Lin Jing because she knows that only Lin Jing can give her a happy and peaceful life that she wants even though she can never love him the way she loved Chen Xiao Zheng. Even though he’s not the person love the most, she knows that she has made a right decision. Just like when CXZ asks her between 2 men, one is helpless and one is successful. Both of them also make her wait, one is just 3 years and the other is forever, what’s the difference?
“Of course it’s different. This has nothing to do with whether a man is successful or not. I wait for him forever, but I know that I’m part of his life. And the helpless one, I wait for him 3 years, then there will be another 3 years. It will always be a wrong number on his design project.”
For the sake of his future, CXZ is willing to give up ZW. That’s why fated he lost her forever.
“In this life, each of us will have one Chen Xiao Zheng, but in the end, the one standing next to you will be a Lin Jing.”
Most of XYW’s books are really good but I don’t like most of her male leads bcos they are written too realistically, haha….I don’t really fancy this book bcos the 2 male leads are jerks. In the end, I don’t really care who she’ll choose. Anyway I leans slightly towards Lin Jing bcos he came back & willing to marry ZW who is better than CXZ who asked her to wait. Yet, I do feel kind of sad for CXZ bcos his path in life is not as smooth sailing as LJ. Btw in another book, it is written CXZ married that lesbian rich girl. I think I might have written this but I’ll repeat it again, heehee…My fav XYW’s books are Let Me Look at You (a must read), Original & Mirage.
The movie seems to be doing well in china. I might watch it just for comparision sake.

I haven’t watched the movie yet. So I can’t tell whether its good or not. I am now reading Let Me Look at You and it’s long but ill continue reading it.
The book is slow but do persevere as you’ll be richly rewarded:) Plenty of spoilers & analyses here. If you need therapy, leave me a msg, lol.

Where did you guys read it? Did you read it in English? I live in Germany and REALLY want to read it, but I can’t understand Chinese and can’t find the book in English… Is there a translation and can I buy it anywhere?

You can only read it in Chinese or listen to the Chinese audio book if you can’t read Chinese. But understanding Chinese is a must. Currently, there is no English translation. You can watch the movie which has English subtitles but it is very different from the book.
