Finding Glowing Beauty in Books 书中自有颜如玉 by 板栗子 Ban Li Zi (HE)

What does it feel like when you have a best-selling detective fiction author for a boyfriend?

Whenever you offend him, he would look at you disdainfully, “A character molded after you could only ever appear in my novel as a deceased victim.”

Whenever you seriously offend him, he would threaten you, “The very next victim who dies in my novel would be named after you.”

Whenever you seriously, seriously offend him, he would add on to the previous threats, “Furthermore, the victim would have died at the hands of an extremely perverse and twisted serial killer, and would have suffered an extremely painful and terrible death.”

But, by a stroke of coincidence, if you happen to be this best-selling author’s editor, he need not resort to the abovementioned tactics. In fact, all he has to do is one, single thing –

Delay the submission of his draft. : )

    Like most of Ban Li Zi’s novels, this novel is a smooth and easy read that involves minimum angst and turmoil, and revolves around a famous author and his editor in the publishing industry. Unlike the terribly sweet and sugary Marriage Concerto, Finding Glowing Beauty in Books involves more hilarity and funny moments – all thanks to the male lead’s poisonous tongue and obvious lack of EQ. His sharp and barbed words makes sweet, syrupy romance near impossible, but fear not as there are still a few precious moments of sweetness sprinkled throughout the novel.

    The female lead, Lan Ning, is a rookie editor who begins the novel by having recently lost her job. She tries her luck by applying to one of the biggest publishing companies in the country, and to her utmost surprise, managed to land herself a spot! Despite being a newbie to the company, she manages to get herself assigned to the best-selling author, Xing Xin. Of course – it turns out that Lan Ning wasn’t experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime lucky streak – she had been hired by the company specifically to hound the lazy, procrastinating best-selling author who always manages to come up with crazy, innovative and creative excuses to delay his draft. Thus begins Lan Ning’s disillusionment with her favourite author as she discovers his sharp, sarcastic and poisonous tongue, his ability to drive her nuts, and his neverending excuses to delay his draft.

    The male lead, Yan Ru Yu (pen-name Xing Xin) is a best-selling detective fiction author who always manages to churn out hit after hit – however, what his readers don’t know about him is his horridly lazy personality and his hilarious antics to get all the other best selling authors to delay the submission of their drafts along with him (setting up a chat group titled “Have You Delayed Your Draft Today?”, meting out punishment to the authors who submit their drafts the earliest, and instigating all the authors to go on a mass holiday together). He enjoys seeing his editor go crazy with exasperation, but gradually warms up to her and ultimately learns to punctually hand in his draft under various threats (e.g. of her losing her job, of her not agreeing to his marriage proposal etc).

    @Grace

    There is a second male lead but he doesn’t put up much of a fight and Lan Ning’s landlord is into cosplaying, lolita costumes, maid costumes, and the such which is why she’s wearing a pink maid outfit. (:
