The Promotion Record of A Crown Princess (Go Princess Go) 太子妃升职记 by 鲜橙 Xian Cheng (HE)

51pPSW+2DBL

In order to make up for errors in his work, Deity Siming secretly brought the soul of a modern man called Chen Ran from Hades to possess the body of the crown princess of Nan Xia called Zhang Peng Peng, who has just “fallen into water and died from drowning.”

Dislike by her husband and detest by her mother-in-law, how Zhang Peng Peng with a male’s mind in a female’s body gets promoted smoothly from ‘Crown Princess’ all the way to be the ‘Empress Dowager’?

This is the history of the struggle of a ‘woman’ in the harem  ……
At the same time, this is also the history of the suffering of a ‘man’ in the harem ……

Who does not know that being the Crown Princess is the worst job in the whole world:

One: Poor promotion prospects. Crown Princess – Empress – Empress Dowager, long time span and extremely difficult!

Two: No labor protection, not to mention insurance, so can be dismissed any time. After dismissal, not allowed to be re-employed!

Three: Dangerous nature of work, as may die any time. If the Crown Prince unable to become the Emperor, you follow him and be out of luck together. If the Crown Prince is able to become the Emperor, you have to be careful  on your own!

In summary, being the Crown Princess is not really a good job because it has no prospects, very stressed and labor intensive ……

The sequel is The Princess and the Werewolf. The main protagonist is the daughter of the main couple from Go Princess Go.

Found the drama. Confused. Who are those other guys?
    I don’t like harem. Hopefully it’s not.

I haven’t read the novel, but recently I watched the drama, with the initial intention of merely to find out what is the fuss over it among the Chinese netizens, and also because I was bored out of my mind lol. It turns out to be way more enjoyable than expected because it’s just simply light-hearted and entertaining. That is despite all the cheap ass looking props/settings/costumes. The general sentiment is that, the quality of the cast and an interesting story really compensated for that (which I totally agree). The characters are also extremely lovable. Honestly I’m still not very sure how to treat the romance in this, like is it BG or BL? I’m not a BL fan but I’m still watching it anyway. Now I’m contemplating whether I should read the novel while I impatiently wait for new episodes hahaha

May I confirm if this is a HE, BE or OE? There’s no mention of it and I would really like to know.

I have the exact sentiments as milquety. I’m not a fan of BL as depicted by the novel but I’ve been reading on some of the drama websites that it’s hilarious and similarly to milquety I’m on my holiday break so I thought I’ll give it a go. I would liked to have watched this with english subtitles but I think due to this being a webdrama it’s surprisingly easy to follow even if there are some things which are lost in translation, or lack of.

To be honest, I’m not sure if I’ll recommend this to my friends let alone my family. The premises of the drama is rather unique and one must remain very open-minded about the whole BL concept, Although I will say that it’s not too overt in the drama but there are not-so subtle hints about the relationship. Having said, and despite the rather ambiguous relationships I must admit that it’s done in such a way that I found hilarious. Much to surprise and somewhat delight I sat through 15 episodes thoroughly enjoying the development between the crown prince and crown prince(ess). The chemistry between the main hero & heroine is wonderful and very believable. I undoubtedly have some favourite scenes and I have gone back to re-watch some of them.

I am now very curious as to what changed his(her) mind to wholeheartedly to love the crown prince. Mind you, for someone so young (the actor is only 23) he’s carried himself very well during this drama and I found him very charismatic and a good-looking crown prince. I absolutely loved his dubbed voice it matches his stature and exactly how a crown prince should sound. Admittedly, I am rather smitten with this contained young man. I will definitely look out for this new actor, I think this drama will be definitely bring some stardom to this cast. As for the main hero(ine). I initially thought she was only pretty and rather average but I really liked her afterwards as she manages to change her look with the different outfits and hairstyle. Of course the gawdy gowns and modern outfits were out of place with the ancient backdrop but the intent of this drama is not to be taken too seriously so I didn’t have any issues and enjoyed the scenes.

I admit there were times I’ve forgotten that the crown princess is really a man and I’ve discovered he seems to be rather accepting of his new body and perhaps even the love interests of two men. The romantic scenes are wonderfully played out and unexpectedly unique and not too cliche. I am definitely looking forward to the upcoming episodes…

Forgot to mention that I love the theme song and the whole soundtrack – again very good for a small and rather unknown webdrama. I’ve discovered that I’m pleasantly surprised by the ever increasing quality of Chinese drama!

This is HE if I don’t remember incorrectly. The crown princess had a really hard time accepting her new body and gender identity but eventually went with it and fell for the hero’s love. So it’s like disguised BL.

I’m also planning to watch the drama despite the bad trailer, coz someone else recommended it being hilarious with a cast that can actually act with a straight face despite the ridiculous costumes. Now your comments are giving me more confidence to click “play” lol

@Hamster. I think you’ll enjoy this drama if like the cast otherwise it will be a little painful to watch. Some parts even with my limited Chinese is cringe-worthy so perhaps go in without any expectations. At the end of the day, it’s light and entertaining. I’d be interested in your thoughts 🙂 i.e what you make out of this terrible but funny drama.

    milquety December 29, 2015 at 4:07 am |

@Hamster and @hun Oh yay more English-speaking audience watching this drama as well! I’m fluent in Chinese so if y’all need help understanding anything in the drama, you can ask me or simply just to talk about the drama haha 🙂 (If you have mydramalist, I’m the same username there). It’s also super interesting reading about the director’s explanations on the costume designs because we all know it’s weird as hell LOL.

Anyway I agree with Hamster that this is a drama I do not dare to recommend to people around me because of the dubious premise. It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure. I’m also looking forward to how the romance develops as well, like what Hamster had mentioned! I just hope it flows naturally. I’ve started reading the novel last night so to get a feel of how the drama will work out.

ps: I’m sure this is HE based on whatever I’ve read from the Chinese netizens

    hamster428 December 29, 2015 at 4:14 am |

@hun & milquety: I just watched 10 eps! I was tempted to say that this is one of those “it’s so bad it’s good”, but then again I don’t think it’s operating on sheer ridiculousness; I think there are real merits to be had here.

The acting, true to rumors, is commendable for unknown new faces. It’s better than a lot of big names out there, in fact. The c.princess is awesome. She switches from man to woman so seamlessly. The c.prince is <3 too. He looks young but commands great presence on screen. It also helps once he dons a proper hairdo. So freakin hot.

I've read the novel so I can say the source material is good as far as plot goes. It's an intriguing pondering on sexuality in a romance novel. Wherein you're asked whether sexuality is a physical or mental thing. The drama so far hasn't shown a lot of that struggle, however. The 1st time they did the deed, c.princess was actually horrified bcoz he wasn't used to being the one who gets "penetrated" and it came as a shameful shock to him. The process of falling in love in this novel takes much longer since it also involves the his personal journey and acceptance of his new identity. With that said, I saw some extra scenes from MVs and can't wait for the touching stuff.

And how I love the physical gags . I do miss them later on as the drama(tics) gets going in earnest. My fav is still the scene where 9 Wang and Taizi sit all dignified on their respective ghetto sedan chair as their servants engage in a petty race. Omg haha it looks so idiotic I wonder how anyone can keep a straight face. They should do more of those.

I actually haven't cringed at all. I think they're totally embracing the cheesiness and just running with it. I have to lol everytime people's hair and dress get a blast of wind for the ethereal effect.

  11. milquety
    milquety December 29, 2015 at 6:25 am |

@hamster: Agreeing to whatever you’ve said! I haven’t cringed one bit and I’m really enjoying it, as opposed to all the other actual proper dramas I’ve been watching lately which have been massive disappointments. I think the favourable thing about the drama is that it is really not pretentious at all. They take advantage of their lack of resources, and present it in very memorable and hilarious way.

And yes the cast’s good looks really enhanced viewers experience haha! The director seems to be quite insistent on using new faces which isreally commendable as long as they have good potential. I think the director really succeeded in that aspect.

    ((I won’t admit I’ve been replaying the OST >_>))

p/s: oh no I think I messed up the usernames I was replying to in my previous comment?? I’m confused haha sorry for the confusion though

This drove me batty. I’ve lost my comments 3 times!
    Okay here goes…
    @Hamster and milquety

I’m absolutely delighted that you’ve enjoyed the drama and it’s nice to know that there’s someone out there who also has interesting taste 😛
Funnily enough, Hamster I was thinking the exact same thing. It does beg the questions if our sexuality is determined by physical appearance or is a mental state. Certainly I’m of the opinion that most behaviours, although learned, are dictated by social norms.

I am however tickled by the thought that c.prince is a latent boy lover considering he did’t pay much attention before she ‘turned’. Oh so many closets to open.
Aside from the hilarious moments as in episode 6-7, where c.princess in her drunken stupor unknowingly does the deed with c.prince and pretty much announces it to the whole world by shouting out, but then the next scenes had me in stitches. She’s vomiting like crazy in the basin. From her expression, the mere thought of having done the deed, and with a man, renders her quite ill and sends her clutching again at the basin was hilarious. I’m still chuckling.
Then the soccer scene. C.princess smirks confidently that c.prince challenges her to a ball game but then she misses the ball at every turn…oh dear that was so funny and she’s trying really, really hard too. I don’t know how c.prince kept a straight face all this time – it was hilarious.

My favourite parts are the romantic scenes. It only seems to get better and hotter. The secret is the chemistry between the leads. The chemistry increases with time and at every scene. I love their interactions – it’s so darn cute and sweet but definitely not cringe-worthy. Even the awkward kiss in episode 9 was done with perfect timing and with just the right amount of man-handling.
I really like panorama of emotions played by both leads. On one hand, c.princess has no idea and simply doesn’t care that c.prince is falling for her. Whilst this drives c.prince simply crazy and he’s mad with frustration. But then he doesn’t know why he’s angry and frustrated The interchange is so fun to watch and you’re almost guarantee hilarity will follow suit.

I did note previously that I am smitten with c.prince. He’s so darn good-looking and I love the way he looks at c.princess. It’s definitely swoon-worthy.

@Milquety – as you’ve kindly offered can I trouble to you provide a brief summary of:
Episode 6-7 – horse drawn carriage. After c.princess sees the hickey on c.prince (snicker) she says something to him which obviously makes him very angry as he tells c.princess to get out. I can’t make it out, would you be able to translate it for me, please?

Episdoe 15 – to be or not be pregnant. C.princess believes the imperial doctor has played a trick on her. She says she’s happy for c.prince. (Correct me if I’m wrong) I think it’s because the girl he likes is also pregnant but what did she say to set him off again. She seems to be the only one to be able to push his buttons. He tosses the tea cups into the onsen and sets off in a huff. I am very curious and perhaps I’m only getting bits and pieces due to the language barriers so if you can enlighten me I would really appreciate it.

    Thank you!!

Sorry for the confusion but ‘hun’ and ‘hungryhippo’ are one and the same. It’s those darn auto-correct. It frequently renders me either dyslexic or a pervert…

Btw: I love the soundtrack, such a nice contrast to the less serious tone to the drama. I must commend the director for selecting a relatively unknown cast. It’s rather refreshing and they have so much potential.

Is it just me or does other prince (is it number 9) reminds you of a younger version of Hawick Lau? There’s some angles where I’m thinking I must be watching Flying Daggers.

  14. hamster428
    hamster428 December 29, 2015 at 1:11 pm |

@hungryhippo I think in 9, she was insinuating that he got the hicky from someone else “having fun last night didn’t ya? Wink wink” and it drove him batty that she didn’t remember their passion? Haha milquety can correct me on that. She does that same nudge nudge wink wink throughout so I’m assuming she downplays her importance to the c.prince and promotes Jiang again that pissed him off in 15.

Love all the comments. Will come back for a proper reply after I go watch some more eps.

    @hamster – ROFL

Oh I love it! That’s hilarious. So going by his body language and expression I thought it was the case but having it confirmed is even funnier. Mind you, c.prince telling her to get out was so darn attractive. I don’t think since Hua Qian Gu have I been so interested and heavily invested into a drama as much as this one.

I’m up to episode 17 and her antics – trying to divert his attention to the rest of his concubine is so funny. He doesn’t want anyone else but her!! He’s so annoyed and dumbfounded (so cute) that he’s unwanted. Yeah you’re not alone on this one c.prince – but then again watching it is so entertaining 🙂

    More please!

I’ve noticed that they must have use the wind-machine to death. I agree that everytime it’s used for an ethereal effect it is rather funny but goodness how they can see each other with all those flower petals haphazardly flying around them is an acting feat in itself. I would have been rather distracted by all that noise and dust.

Overall, I do like the director’s sense of humour and he’s done a very good job so far.

  17. milquety
    milquety December 29, 2015 at 3:18 pm |

    @hungryhippo @hamster:
I’m equally intrigued by the topic of sexuality invoked by this drama! I am actually really fond of the c.prince for the same reasons. He’s cute and whenever he gets irritated about c.princess not getting jealous about his matter with Jiang-shi, it’s just hilarious. Also agreeing @ swoon-worthy c.prince. 😉

    Oh yeah here you go~

    ep.6:
Right after c.princess noticed the hickey, c.princess immediately assumes he got it from Jiang-shi, then proceeds to give him advice about dealing with women.
C.prince: “Why do you keep mentioning Jiang-shi?”
C.princess: *explains that she was just sharing with him her romantic experiences and dating tips blah blah*
C.prince: “Why are you returning to your insensible state after just one night?” ((me: *winks winks*))
    C.princess: *continues sharing advices*
C.prince: *chases her down the carriage*
    So it’s basically c.prince being an adorable petty lil shit over the fact that c.princess doesn’t seem to mind about his romance with Jiang-shi at all, which ultimately translates into c.princess not caring for him romantically yet. So Hamster, you’re right! Oh poor c.prince. ;n;

ep.14: (I think the part you mentioned is in ep14 instead of ep15?)
C-prince being the caring husband he is, tells c.princess to let the servants know if she need anything, which c.princess responded to that c.prince should care more about Jiang-shi and that everyone is happy for him that Jiang-shi is pregnant.
C-prince: “Are you sure you aren’t speaking the opposite of what you feel? I wasn’t intending to hide the fact (that Jiang-shi is pregnant) from you. I just couldn’t bring myself to tell you the truth.”
C-princess: “I’m genuinely happy for you!”
C-prince: “What are you happy about?”
C-princess: “I’m happy for you, I’m happy for Jiang-shi, I’m happy for myself too!”
C-prince: “For what are you happy about?”
C-princess’ OS: Because I’m not the one who’s pregnant
C-princess: *continues advising him that he should care more about Jiang-shi blah blah*
C-prince: *gets angry and sweeps the cups off table*
So basically it’s the same issue again lmao

ohhh @ autocorrect! thanks for clarifying that! 🙂
Yes I have actually read some people saying the 9th prince looks like Hawick Lau from certain angles too~

  18. hamster428
    hamster428 December 30, 2015 at 4:15 am |

lol about the wind machine! It cracks me up even more when it’s used on 9 Wang coz when his pristine white bodice dress starts fluttering, I imagine him as Xiao Long Nu. And yes, he does look like Hawick Lau because of the lips.

I wouldn’t have wanted this drama any other way, actually. It was a great decision that they went the direction they did, because had they taken themselves more seriously, the cheesiness would’ve worked against them. Take for example the costumes, at their best, they still pale in today’s standards. So why even bother? You’ll just look like you’re trying too hard. It was genius that they gave the c.prince that ridic sleeveless shirt and buzzcut. Now he looks better and better each time he appears, positively 100% radiant in his proper long sleeves that we are thanking the drama gods for even if they are still subpar in any other production.

omg, haha, yes, c.prince secretly into men? That’s a total possibility. Or maybe he’s mostly into women, but if given the opportunity, can swing the other way? I do think a lot of it has been built into our physical body via hormones and what not, but even so, there’s so much room and so many ways for attraction to happen, people are just prevented from exploring those options because of the social norms hungryhippo had mentioned.

I’m on c.prince’s ship too. It took him the entire book to earn her love coz she was forever putting her guard up against him as the emperor. I hope I get moar shippy scenes in the drama. The actor is adorable doing that whole tough on the outside but boyish at heart. He looks so happy to be eating her durian soup, hah. (also, +5 points for the durian obsession).

I’m on 23… I heard the drama is just 35 eps right? That means 12 more to go? Back to watching youtube MVs on repeat (agree that the OST is awesome!)

Oh my heart, my sweet, sweet heart! Towards the end of episode 19 was the cutest thing ever. How he wanted both mother and child to be safe and well and just look at c.princess’ expression she was very touched. Me too!

Oh I love this drama it’s so still funny and what’s his name did look like batman gone wrong…

And there it is again – the wind machine. I seriously think the director may have stolen it from one of Beyonce’s concert.

    Okay let’s forge ahead!

@milquety – thank you so much for the translation. It’s greatly appreciated.

I’ve now realised that my Chinese is actually little better than I initially thought. I still can’t make out some words but I get the gist of what they’re saying.

Btw: I LOVE durian, and yes it is very pungent and not to everyone’s taste but to me it’s one of my favourite fruit – she’s making me want some. Salivating right now.

lol, I just realised that I love c.prince hot fuchsia breastplate. I don’t know how he pulled it off but darn it – he looks very good. On most it would have been ridiculous and even effeminate but since he commands such presence IT’S SUPER COOL! Gosh, I’m definitely a c.prince shipper. Even if it sunk I’m not getting off.

  23. hamster428
    hamster428 December 30, 2015 at 12:46 pm |

@hungryhippo: did you catch the dialogue when he said “the baby looks like you” and she said “thank god, coz if he looks like you, he’ll need to get cosmetic surgery in S.Korea”? rofl totally ruined the mood. But whatever does she mean? Her hubby is already so hot.

  24. hungryhippo
    hungryhippo December 30, 2015 at 1:18 pm |

    @hamster – WHAT – ROFL.

No I only got the bit about thank God…so I guessed the rest but that’s so funny!!! She’s too funny. Agreed. Her hubby is so hot already. Anymore and I’m going to expire (hehehe)

I admit that I’m a little sad that she pushed c.prince towards Jiang shu. I felt that he was so hurt by her actions and all he wanted was for her to care for a him little.

He did the ‘angry’ look so well. Even I was a little scared. I think c.princess is forgetting that he is still the emperor. Then when she tries to sweet-talk him. With so little effort too. She’s definitely got him wrapped him around her little finger. I didn’t quite like 21-23 only some moments as too much of their time were spent apart. I want their sweet moments.

Btw: Did you see the part where she puked when she was about to kiss one of the 4 beauties. I was in stitches!! Oh I think this where she starts to have feelings for him.

I want their antics and gags. Hey did you the doctor’s middle finger?! I almost died laughing there. Oh my stomach.

  25. milquety
    milquety December 30, 2015 at 3:27 pm |

Wow the overwhelming comments haha~ I’m agreeing with everything you guys have said, particularly what Hamster had mentioned about the style of the drama. The costumes and props and all definitely enhances the comedic effect of the whole drama.

Funny how I’m Singaporean yet I never quite enjoyed the taste of durian, but the durian thing in the drama is indeed pretty amusing.

    I think the latest 5 episodes didn’t seemed to be the most positive for our dear OTP. Similarly, I didn’t quite like 21-23 too. The OTP spent too much time apart, and there were more fussy romantic entanglements than I liked. But I had definitely enjoyed the scenes where c.prince hugged c.princess from the back while they were lying in bed, and right after c.princess gave birth. Those were super sweet~ And the scene in ep 19 where they had the talk at the balcony really tugged at my heartstrings. The c.prince seemed so hurt yet he was still firm on his love for c.princess. ;_;

The development of their romance so far doesn’t seem to be too positive because c.princess is still very wary of the c.prince even though we can tell she’s starting to slowly open up to him. I would be incredibly touched by the c.prince by now already if I were her! But understandably, in her position, she doesn’t think there is any trust among the royal members. And she’s mentally a man to begin with, so it would probably take an arduous process for her to be willing to open up to the c.prince. Or that’s what I’ve interpreted?

    Apart from our two lead characters, I’m loving Yang Yan more and more! He’s such an adorable thing, and his bromance with the 9th king is really gaining my adoration. ^^;;

Thanks hamster428, so happy to see the c.prince smiling, as he has a serious face most of the time, and the picture of the family is adorable!
I agree with you guys, the actor of c.prince: 盛一倫 is so captivating and hot; I like how he uses his eyes to act the character’s emotions and frustrations.

@hamster428 @hungryhippo @peanuts @milquety nice meeting you guys here and thank u so so much for the enlightenment about the story so far, because the language barrier all I can do until now is just make sense about the story through the expressions of the actors and the rest just fill the blank with my own version of it. I dont like the recent episodes too exp from 21-23, except the end part of ep 23, the bed scenes..LOL. Thank u so much hamster for BTS and MV, so we can see a little bit of the scenes from upcoming episodes.
But few things still making me mad curious, can you guys care to explain a bit about it:

    1. What happen with the real c.princess, about the drowning, did she take her own life or is it an accident?

2.Why c.prince slap c.princess on ep 6, and what make him apologize at ep 7?

3.Who is this Jiang shi character, is she a concubine, princess, or maid, and what happen in ep 21-22 that make her get promoted to become c.prince close companion? And milquety said above that Jiang shi is pregnant too, did she give birth yet or not?

4.Can you guys tell me what is that backflag thing for?

I’m so sorry that I’m asking too much questions, thanks before for your kind replies.

    My fav moments so far:
    1.When c.prince sit with c.princess in ep 5
2.When c.princess find out about the deed in ep 6
    3.When c.prince apologize to c.princess in ep 7
4.when c prince finally realize about his love in ep 8
    5.sweet hugs in ep 19
    6.c.princess antics
    7.our OTP changing costumes
yeah its just a few scenes that I keep replaying for now, how about yours…wink..wink..
Thank u again guys and Happy New Year!!!

    hamster428 December 31, 2015 at 12:40 am |

@lara 1/ we don’t know for sure what happened. All we know is that both ladies fell into the water and the c.prince dove after Jiang shi instead of his wife.

2/ he slapped her bcoz he thought she ripped Jiang shi’s clothes off on purpose. Then he apologized after finding out Jiang shi orchestrated the whole thing herself

3/ Jiang shi is c.princess’s distant cousin. She is orphaned so she came to live with the Zhang family. Then she married Prince Zhao and Pengpeng married c.prince. So she is also a princess consort. She later got made into the c.prince’s “personal maid” under a new identity. That is actually a demotion, not promotion if you ask me haha. Her pregnancy was fake. She wasn’t pregnant.

4/ scroll up to the 2nd pic in my previous comment. The backflag is just a runway fashion thing.

Thank you Hamster for the links! I’ve been snooping around the drama’s Weibo tag so I’ve seen the photos before, but I haven’t seen the videos yet!

    @lara4liwa
Expanding on what Hamster’s answer for (4): I read that the director wanted an accessory or some way to make the characters look magnificent and powerful on the battlefield, which was why they were inspired to use that wooden frame thingy lol. I guess it did worked to the director’s desired outcome because the tendency to use lots of wind really worked well with it haha.

Oh yeah I don’t think there will be new episodes until 3rd Jan. Episodes 19-23 were released for the paid members in a form of a member privilege preview. But somehow they got leaked on Maplestage, so we’re really lucky in a sense since we weren’t supposed to have access to 19-23 yet. Meanwhile, those 5 episodes would be aired one episode each daily. The next round of episodes preview for the members would be on the 3rd, which means episodes 24-28 would only be out then. Or at least this is how things seem to be from what I’ve read. Let’s wait patiently for the new episodes! 🙂

    Happy New Year, everyone!

@hamster – Oh I love you, if I didnt love c.prince so much (hehehe). Thank you for the breastplate and I must say c.prince has the sweetest smile ever. It’s kind of shy and boyish all at the same time (sigh).

I LOVE their little baby prince. He’s so cute and just how I imagine he’ll look-like with such good-looking parents. Those cheeks – big squeeze!

@lara – welcome! I think you’ve may have inadvertently joined the GPGoers little harem 🙂
I found this link where dramaiwi is recapping the drama: http://www.dramakiwi.com/2015/12/go-princess-go-2015.html

It doesn’t quite capture the ‘spirit’ of this drama (I mean the ‘deed’ was glossed over) but enough to help you make sense of what’s happening.

Thanks milquety for the update I was wondering if Christmas and NY was packaged early because we’ve had 5 episodes in a few days and from I’ve gathered so far the drama is scheduled for completion on 16 Jan 16. I am literally counting the days until the 3 Jan.

    Until then.

@Peanuts – lol so you couldn’t resist after all. Hope you’ve enjoyed it so far.

You have to admit c.prince is very nice to look at – pecks and all 🙂

I understand it’s not for everyone and definitely not ‘Legend of Miyue’ status. We really can’t compare but I always admire and support a good-looking leads and of course as you’ve noted, for their efforts with such limited budget and resources.

Although, these days even with the limited budget and some extent the lack the ‘investors’, the Chinese dramas are still exceptionally well-made and very entertaining. My mum and I were discussing this topic earlier this evening.

How exceedingly well the Chinese movies/dramas are doing these days. I should also commend them that despite the low budget productions, the actors themselves are talented, and not to mention extremely good-looking. It must the selection pool in China which is much more varied and extensive.

Prior to that, I admittedly scoff at the idea of watching any Chinese dramas. They were tedious with little talent to recommend. I, have, of course changed by tune dramatically after watching Bu Bu Jing Xin and Palace Lockheart where I’ve enjoyed both dramas.

Yes, c.prince is exceedingly young. I slightly feel ‘salty’ and would likened myself to a cougar for ‘liking’ him and thinking he’s handsome but hey it’s a free country and it’s not like I’m going to turn up on his doorstep and slip him a note – perhaps for a rendezvous (love letters are too incriminating).

I am magnanimous enough though to want him more for c.princess…

@peanuts you didn’t appreciate their promotion of Malay durians, albeit in Thai? 😛

I like the entire cast in general, but the real shining star is Crystal Zhang. She’s so gorgeous, and excellent in her portrayal, and not that young, which begs the question why hasn’t she been more well known?! Or perhaps she’s disdainful of the mainstream crap they put out anyway and doesn’t want to conform haha.

@hungryhippo I’m not watching Miyue Zhuan but fans are rating C.Princess a lot higher:
    http://afamily1.vcmedia.vn/k:FeC7mIEfmQHVffExQxvrGdkRdYCZvO/Image/2015/12/AfamilyPAthaituphithangchuckyminguyettruyen8-c6825/thai-tu-phi-thang-chuc-ky-6.jpg

And whatever, they are only getting younger and younger by the day. We can’t be expected to stop fangirling just because of that haha. Age equality!

    hungryhippo January 1, 2016 at 4:39 pm |

@hamster – lol, never underestimate the power of fangirling no matter what age.

In regards to the ratings – I can see why Miyue although a much higher budget production isn’t as rated as highly as Go Princess Go. I can say from personal experience having watched both, Miyue (definitely a high quality production) isn’t as funny, hilarious or as entertaining as Go Princess Go. Honestly both has its merits but they are truly different genre albeit both are ancient dramas.

Can’t really compare the two aside from the fact that one has more money than the other.

Lol, I like the age equality, nicely put 🙂

Really like the drama so I begin to read the novel. A lot of scenes are skipped in the drama. The crown prince in the novel is very calculative and a lot of things that he did has a reason behind it. We get to understand him more and appreciate him more.

For example, in the novel, he is not really in love with Jiang shi. He and the 5th prince (Jiang shi husband) had to find a reason to make other people believe that they hate each other so the 9th prince doesn’t know that they are from the same side.

Jiang shi pregnancy was a lie made by the crown prince because he wanted to know how the Zhang family (the crown princess family) is going to react. He knew that they will made the c princess fake her pregnancy.

He is also the one behind the assassination attempt against the c princess (like in the drama), but we got the explanation why he did it. Also in that murder attempt, the 9th was not clean too, je also send men to kill her. The c prince and the 9th prince wanted to find a reason to fight against each other and get the throne.

In the novel, it was explained Zhang Peng Peng is ger true self and that she was in a man’s body because of an error. The man form was actually the true form of the other Zhang Peng Peng. When she pushed Jiang shi in the river she was returned to her real body. Our lead heroine was really mad when she discovers that the other Zhang Peng Peng use her man body to sleep with men lol.

All and all I still love the drama. Wish it would have cut some unnecessary scenes (like the story of the David statue) and more explanations about every moves and decision of the crown prince, but I believe they want to keep the drama very light and cut out the political part.

The leading actress is very pretty and I tind it amusing to look at her wardrobe which is ancient inspire but so much skin showing lol.
It is also easier in the drama to believe that she is a woman and we see in the last episodes that they are putting less of her man voice like they want us to forget her gender.

    milquety January 2, 2016 at 6:03 am |

@Quynie: Ahhhh thanks for the insight to the novel! I’m only at about chapter 22 so far but by the sound of what I have read about the novel, I would have actually preferred the novel’s direction. At least that doesn’t make the c.prince as frivolous and the 9th prince as selfless as they are made to be the drama, since tbh I’m not the fondest of the drama’s take on the characters. I agree with your thoughts about the drama though I think they can still do more with explaining the c.prince’s intentions. I see too many people complaining about the change of c.prince’s character in the drama, which is a pity because it sounds like a lot of potential from the novel was lost. Like yeah c.prince’s still relatively lovable in the drama, but he could be EVEN MORE lovable. I guess that saves us from falling too deeply though hahahah. 🙂

The fact that Zhang Peng’s real body was supposed to be female’s after all was a pretty interesting explanation to me. Unlike the drama, it removes the uncertainty of whether Zhang Peng will return back to his male body, and perhaps provide more comfort to the audience regarding the peculiar relationship between c.prince & c.princess.

  41. hungryhippo
    hungryhippo January 2, 2016 at 12:47 pm |

lol, he doesn’t need to say anything I would make excuses for him. We often do for the good-looking ones

But it’s nice to know that c.prince is more calculating in the novel, although I don’t expect anything less. In order to survive, you really can’t be yourself perhaps that’s why he fell for c.princess. He didn’t have to pretend with her.

It sounds as though the novel has a more serious tone but I think it’s actually nice that the drama has taken a more comedic approach. Either way, this drama is very entertaining.

Can’t wait for the next episodes, hopefully they’ll ramp up the romantic scenes.

  42. hamster428
    hamster428 January 2, 2016 at 1:24 pm |

regarding the novel vs drama differences, I do prefer it that c.prince doesn’t love Jiangshi and hasn’t ever slept with her as the novel depicted. I like my male leads clean lol. But I’m not sure if I can care less whether c.princess’s original body was male of female. In the novel, that was used to explain why the God of Fate brought him back to the past and into the c.princess’s body. If used to set up the premise, as in, why did he time travel and get stuck in a female body to begin with, then sure, I can go along with it. But I don’t think it can be used to explain sexuality. Take the original c.princess who is now in Zhang Peng’s male body for instance. She still sleeps with men and prefer it that way, body be damn.
Also, politics was more intricate in novel coz it was 2 books long. It’s understandable that they would cut that down to fit the mood and length of the webdrama. All in all, the drama has kept a lot of the novel’s spirit and general plotline, so book fans don’t have to be disappointed here.

I am so happy I found this forum. I’ve been reading everyone comments and it’s so nice to find like minded people who are also enjoying the drama.

I’m loving this drama so far. It’s light hearted and funny. While waiting for new episodes to be released, I’m dying to discuss the drama so far.

I have a couple of questions and would love to hear your opinion.

During the balcony scene, crown prince and princess had a rare honest heart to heart conversation. It was so sweet when c. Prince hugged c princess when she said she was cold. He was trying so hard to be close to her – physically but also emotionally. C. Princess was shocked speechless of course. My question is, what did he say to her when he held her hand? I understand bits and pieces. He wanted to make a bet but she refused and he looked so sad. What was the bet?

The book that this drama is based on… Is it written in English or Chinese?

I really don’t understand C prince’s development of interest and love for c princess. I completely understand why c princess doesn’t clue in that he likes her until Green prince tells her. He went from organising her assassination to refusing all women except her. Unmm huh?! How did that happens? It doesn’t really explain that in the drama. Does the novel explain why?

  44. hamster428
    hamster428 January 3, 2016 at 6:00 pm |

He said “let’s make a bet. If I can protect you this entire life, then you have to spend that life reigning the empire with me (be my queen by my side)” but then she said “no, men’s promises are the most useless.”

Their relationship is a lot more complicated in the novel. He’s a king, so he’s very scheming and suspicious. He loves her but at the same time they are forever playing a chess game and trying to maneuver each other. You might need to read the book in order to fully answer your question about their feelings progression.

  45. Quynie
    Quynie January 4, 2016 at 12:41 am |

    @ Ollie

The novel is written in Chinese, but I read the translated version in Vietnamese. I don’t think there is an English translation.

For the love development between the male lead and the female lead, I also think that it is not very clear in the drama. I think that the c prince began to like the c princess because she is different from what he believed. Like when she is treating jiangshi very vell. He did told her that he didn’t like her before because she(in fact the other Zhang Peng Peng) was always jealous of jiangshi and tried to make her life difficult. I don’t believe that he really want to kill her.

In the novel, he was never in love with jiangshi so it was easier to believe that he fell for her.

I was disappointed by the c. Prince in the drama when we learned about jiangshi pregnancy. I do like my male lead to be clean too, but more than that, she was still his sister in law so it is very wrong.

Can’t wait to see the new episodes. Apparently there will be some sexy scene in episode 24 hihi.

  46. Ollie
    Ollie January 4, 2016 at 2:51 am |

    @hampster428

Thanks for explaining that scene. There is so much they leave unsaid. C. Prince really wanted to connect with C. Princess. You can see her swaying but she remains firm and rejects him. I think the words she thinks but leaves unsaid is “Pei, you you just admitted that you tried to murder me. Now you want me to trust that you will protect me?!”

I totally agree that they’re playing a game chess with each other. A classic example was when C. Prince threatened to kill Lu Lee to in turn force C. Princess to apologise. She moved heaven and earth to save Lu Lee except yield to C. Princess. In their game, it’s easy to see – they’ve met their match.

    @Quynie

Don’t you think that’s it really ironic? C. Prince disliked C. Princess before because she was mean to JiangShi because she was jealous of their relationship. After Zhang Pang time travel and was no longer jealous, C. Princess did everything he could to make her jealous.

I’ve just finished watching ep 24 to 28. No spoilers but those who want to see the C. Prince and princess to have more screen time together will be very happy. Also, their relationship further develop and we see her start to sway.

  47. hamster428
    hamster428 January 4, 2016 at 4:05 am |

@ollie, they actually did mention the assassination before they talked about the bet.

Here’s how the entire convo went for context:
QS: I grew up with Jiang shi blah blah childhood story blah blah, the more mean you were to her, the more I wanted to treat her well… then I realized I only feel pity for her. I only brought her into the palace coz Zhao Wang kept picking fights w her after the Jiangbei incident.

PP: so do you like JS or do you like JS?

    QS: don’t you get it?

PP: I’m so sleepy, I can’t bother to tell you what you want to hear.

QS: I want to hear it

PP: Fine. You’re telling me even though you’re eyeing the grass on the other side and switched to liking me or going to dump JS, none of it is within your control.

QS: is that what you think? You hate me don’t you?

PP: I did. When you sent ppl to assassinate me, I hated you with all my being. But not anymore.

QS: I actually sensed that you already knew it was my doing. How were you able to let it go?

PP: You only hate someone if you still had hope for him. But my hatred for you is long gone.

    (And then the bet)

I can’t remember bcoz it’s been too long, but in the book, a large part of the assassination was to lure and trap 9Wang. I’m not sure if he intended to kill her or not.

Also, @quynie: from the above convo, it seems he was over Jiang shi at the time he brought her into the palace already, so I’m not sure why he would bed her.

And yes, 24-28 have a chock full of shippy scenes. And it feels like she’s the one who wears the pants in this relationship haha.

  48. Ollie
    Ollie January 4, 2016 at 8:51 am |

    @hampster428
    @milquety

Thanks for translating the whole conversation. It’s clearer now.

    C. Prince is not completely clean. He slept with JiangShi when she was his sister-in-law. But the affair was in the past. That’s why he thought she was pregnant with his son when she faked her pregnancy. You’re right though. He brought her into the palace to enable her to recover from her (pathetic) cough and protect her from Green prince’s anger. He stopped liking her and even tried to brake up – he sent the slip plant. But the fact is, he was dirty before.

So you’ve watched the new episodes… What’s your favourite scene? I love their dance. It’s soo funny. She’s so pervy. I also really like the scene when their son waddles around the empirical court. He looks on with this soft smitten look.

Can you do me a favour and translate a scene for me? I feel like there’s more than what I can catch.

You know that scene when C. Princess and princess climb the mountain to visit the special tree? When they rest on the mat and chat. I don’t understand certain bits but I feel like he’s confessing to her and she’s looking at him like she’s trying to decide whether to trust his words.

PP – I want to pray for romance. So our relationship is long ect
CP- Is that what you really think? If you have any ill intentions, I suggest you stop.
PP – I just want to be a small bird. But I don’t want to fly away.
CP – You’re not a small bird. You’re my queen. I can sort out the truth out of everything you’ve said. You keep mentioning Jiang shi. Ect
    PP- I’m not jealous.
CP – Something… Jealousy…??? The things that you’ve lost. I will slowly find it for you.I will… ??? Until you are willing to take my hand.
PP – (looks at him) Qi Sheng ….???
CP – you’re saying silly things again.
PP – what do you want to pray for?
    CP – ???

I miss the most important part.

My ship is alive and well and truly afloat Episodes 24-28 was just fabulous. So many wonderful scenes with these two. It’s so cute.

Sorry but can I trouble someone to provide some insight as to why c.prince is angry (again) at c.princess towards the end of episode 24? She was trying to tell him that she didn’t mind about Jiangshi but then it got to part where she told c.prince she met 9Wang and the air suddenly got very chilly and he told her he didn’t want to listen to her false words and told her to leave.

Then he got gloriously drunk.and threw a big tantrum. Don’t tell me he’s jealous with a capital ‘J’ – again!!

Then he got all shy after the ‘act’. My super hot c.prince. I love how contrite he was the next morning.

Did I mention I really love c.princess – she’s hilarious. She acts super cute, so coquettish when she’s now know she’s fallen for c,prince.

Then the dance-off (hahahaha). Not sure if anyone noticed but c.princess slowly gave up the ‘lead’ and towards the end c.prince took control 🙂

    C. prince caught C princess in a lie. She confessed that she met Nineth prince and Yang Yan’s dad. She told C prince Yang Yan’s dad wanted her to settle a disputed between Yang Yan and his new wife. While nineth princess was worried about her well being because Jiang Shi was a constant threat. She explained all this while the storm gets louder and more thunderous – which represents C. Prince’s mood because he knows the truth. Yang Yan’s dad told him that they were organising his assassination. He’s angry because he feels betrayed by her continuous lies.

Thanks Ollie. Oh I see why he was angry and yet he still likes and desires her. I guess in his eyes even though she’s caught out c.princess is not afraid to die. No wonder he’s so tortured. He likes her, and she’s sassy so he likes her even more but then he’s mistrustful of her.

Hence, he was so circumspective towards her the next day. He didn’t trust his feelings anymore because she’s his weakness. Prior to that, he probably had no qualms executing her but it won’t be so easy now since he likes her so much.

I have to go back and re-watch it.

Hope this will help clarify your doubts!

PP: […] so I’m here to pray for our relationship to be long-lasting and harmonious.
QS: Is that really what you think? If you have any ulterior motives to this trip, I suggest you better stop with them.
PP: I don’t have any ulterior motives. I just want to be a small bird, but I don’t want to fly. I just want to stay in a cage, living a life without worries.
QS: You’re not a small bird, you’re my queen. I have a grasp of how true your words are. You’ve been constantly bringing up JS lately, it shows that you are beginning to recover the jealousy of old self. ((sorry my translation for this line…..not sure how to phrase this fluently in English orz. it’s more on the line of saying how she’s slowly getting back the trait of being easily jealous which belonged to the actual PP))
PP: I’m not jealous at all.
QS: Easily jealous, capricious, even vain and unreasonable are the traits you’ve lost, and I will slowly help you get them back. I will accommodate to you, indulge you, dote on you, love you, until you are willing to take my hand and stand beside me.
PP: Qi Sheng, are you possessed by a romcom male lead?
    QS: You’re blabbering nonsense again.
PP: What are you going to pray for this time?
QS: I wish for the person beside me to have the same wish as me. ((I particularly adore this line!))

The bit when he said, ” I will accommodate to you, indulge you, dote on you, love you, until you are willing to take my hand and stand beside me.” That’s so sweet! He’s willing to take care of her and wait for her.

The bit when Pang Pang eyes him and said “Qi Sheng, are you possessed by a romcom male lead?” ROFL.

Thanks for taking the time to translate. Much appreciated.

Easily jealous, capricious, even vain and unreasonable, all the traits that she has lost. Why do you think he want to recover them? Aren’t they bad traits?

Wah! So romantic. Sometimes I wish I’ve paid more attention in class.

Romcom lead? Indeed he is 🙂

Again, I’ve only got bit and pieces plus I was completely distracted by c.prince trying to keep c.princess warm (hehehehe).

I suspect he wants those traits back because it demonstrates that c.princess cares for him and trying to vie for his attention. It’s funny how it’s only annoying if you don’t like someone and you want to run away as fast as you can but as soon as you do – it’s cute and adorable.

I have entertained the thought that c.prince sexual preference may be lent towards the other side, especially when you consider the premises of this whole novel and drama.

Somehow it’s not surprising to learn of his tendencies. Fortunately, I watch dramas not based on their personal views, political reasons or even proclivities. Otherwise I may never watch anything 🙂

To be honest, I can’t tell with Asian actors. The concept of a good-looking or handsome man is completely different to western. They’re much more delicate and feminine.

I like the look of c.prince but it’s definitely his personality that I has captured my attention. Without it, it’s just another pretty face.

I sincerely hope the ending will be a happy one but if the director proceeds with option 2, then perhaps the playboy gets to meet c.prince but in a girl form. Oh how funny would that be!

me too! Although I’m reading dramakiwi’s recap and they are very helpful. It makes me appreciate the drama even more. It’s so funny.

Speaking of the recent rumours with c.prince I decided to watch one of their interviews which includes the cast. So there’s Peng Peng, Qi Cheng, 9Wang & Yan Yan. The director was there as well. Looking at the body language (although they all appeared to be quite reticent and shy) what I’ve noticed is that the director definitely likes c.prince.
Although I can’t tell if c.prince reciprocates his affection. C.prince give mes more of a teacher-student vibe, so he’s rather respectful.

C.prince definitely smiles a lot more in real life and he does have a lovely smile 🙂

Everyone seems to like Yan Yan and you can tell he’s popular with the cast. You just want to squeeze those chubby cheeks.

Then there’s Peng Peng, what I found pleasantly surprising is how elegant she is. I somehow thought she’ll be a little more tomboyish and perhaps bubbly but she’s very lady-like and has a gentle manner completely different to how Peng Peng is like in the drama (hehehe) – how interesting!

Then 9Wang is like 9Wang. Not much to say except he acts the same in real life as in the drama.

The interaction between Peng Peng and Qi Cheng is very cute. He was rather shy and embarrassed when they mentioned the kissing scenes. However Peng Peng was more blase and nonchalant perhaps being in the industry a bit longer than c.prince.

So my verdict – can’t tell, don’t care either way because I absolutely this show! It’s funny with a good-looking cast, and they can act too! What more could you ask for 🙂

Although I will say – now, now just because a director with certain tendencies pays attention to one particular cast, (well you kind of expect him to since c.prince is one hot guy) doesn’t necessarily mean the door also swings that way.

So until he actually makes it official then he’s still game (mmmwwaahh).

Ep 35 is out. Everybody watch it. And then, please explain WTF?!

There are some amazingly cute scenes. But the big event ( I don’t want to sploil it for any one so please watch so we can discuss) – was it really necessary? He had already abdicated the thrown. So why? AND, the scenes when all sound was turned off – what is the script writers trying to say? That it was all in his/ her head? Like, it was all imaginary due to coma state.

Someone please, please, please explain your interpretation. I’ve so thoroughly enjoyed this drama but ep 35 feels like someone just got me with a cricket bat.

did someone watch till ep 35 already? there was a part which i didnt understand. Why did PP took a arrow and stab her arm for the soldiers to began fighting? wasnt the emperor getting injured a good enough motive already?

  72. Ollie
    Ollie January 16, 2016 at 12:47 am |

    @1314deamer
They couldn’t announce that the emperor has been hit. That would be a pathological advantage for the enemy army and their soldiers would get too disorientated at a very vital time in the battle. She stabbed herself so that they could announce that she has been hit and hence the Emperor and her must retreat. The soldiers would be angry on her behalf without getting too shaken so they continue fighting.

    @moonhana
Sorry I don’t remember that scene and don’t have the luxury to watch it right now – I wish I could though.

Has anyone watched ep 35 yet? What does it mean? I feel like someone hit me with a bat immediately after watching. I’m still living – now I just want to tear my hair out in frustration.

Isn’t this an adaptation from a book? Is that’s what happens in the end of he book as well. Please, some one who has read the book. Please enlighten me.

Ummm…I am totally flabbergasted and extremely perplexed by the ending. Needless to say that there’s heart-wrenching and poignant ending (such as BBJX) then there’s plain weird and incomprehensible. Unfortunately, this webdrama belongs to the latter.

I have no idea what it means and to be honest I’m too lazy to bother. There are other and more worthy movies/ dramas to spend my brain power on. It was meant to be a light-hearted and funny webdrama with a wonderful unknown cast so I wont allow the latter 15mins to ruin the rest of 34 episodes which I’ve enjoyed wholeheartedly. Although I can’t help sighing. The director could have made it really popular but to select this ending is really a bad decision.

I have no qualms with an ending like GPG but at least make sense.

I even recommended it to my work colleague. At least we have something to discuss after she watches it 🙂

  74. hungryhippo
    hungryhippo January 16, 2016 at 1:28 am |

I don’t think viewers mind the ending but it’s was little nonsensical and too artsy which was executed in such a way that left many, including myself, totally confused.

To reiterate, I have no qualms with sad, happy, bad or even open endings but when it makes no sense then it does reduce the overall enjoyment of the drama and in my opinion damages the director’s reputation.

I understand how profitable it was because many loved the actress who played Peng Peng and as predicted it has catapulted the popularity of the cast.

The only way to placate the viewers is to ensure that season 2 is even better than season 1. Only then are we appeased!

  75. moonhana
    moonhana January 16, 2016 at 1:29 am |

    There’s a season two O_O?! uhh…

I didn’t quite get the ending. My initial thought was that Pengpeng’s soul came back and was just reminiscing of her past times after the ending scene.

or maybe a dream of Zheng Peng while he was in his coma.

And then I had a crazy thought – the way the muted scenes were played made me think that maybe in some weird twisted way Zheng Peng is actually Qi Sheng (LOL). But then that would be weird. It would be like falling in love with yourself. Anyway, I don’t know. This seems too deep for me to analyze since I navigated this drama through my 50 – 60% Chinese proficiency.

  76. hamster428
    hamster428 January 16, 2016 at 1:32 am |

I’ve no idea what the scriptwriter means to tell us. It could be all be a dream ZP came up with while he was comatose, and the concussion might’ve led to hallucinations lol.

A Viet watcher explains that everything was real, and when ZP woke up, he jumped into the pool intending to commit suicide, and that what he saw was the “life reel” one sees before he dies. When he sits across from PP, he is seeing an alter ego of himself, and only through her eyes does he get to see QS, so that’s why it switches back and forth between who is sitting across from PP.

Seriously, assassinators? Like a horde of them? That’s not even necessary, PD! I’d rather they get killed in the last war -_-

  77. 1314dreamer
    1314dreamer January 16, 2016 at 1:41 am |

The ending didnt make any sense. They gave up the throne already why kill them? And QS seemed smart enough to have at least some bodyguards around in case if revenge. Besides the last 10 min or so on ep 35 from dailymotion was without audio so i didnt bother to get the meaning anymore

  79. LovelyDay
    LovelyDay January 16, 2016 at 2:21 am |

I haven’t watched ep 35 yet. But the novel’s ending is like this: QS wins the war and punishes 9th prince for his treachery and betrayal. But no deaths. One of QS’ concubines had an affair with the imperial doctor and was discovered through the ploy of another 2 concubines. All 3 were sent to the nunnery. QS continued to have a monogamous relationship with PP so one by one, the other concubines begged to go to the nunnery as well. They found it tortuous to have to do night duties with QS, aka just staying up all night by his bedside haha. QS and PP had 3 princes and 2 princesses. But PP could never really let ‘herself’ fall for QS as long as he was emperor and he had power over her life and death. To her, she could never completely let her guard down in an unequal relationship. Her biggest wish throughout the novel was to be an empress dowager as she had more faith in having a good life with her son than with QS. QS knew this and planned the ultimate birthday surprise for her – his death. By then their eldest son, the crown prince, had experience managing the affair of the state with his father and ascended the throne. But PP realised that she wasn’t happy and felt a void instead. So she lay wasted in bed refusing food and medicine. The end.

  80. LovelyDay
    LovelyDay January 16, 2016 at 2:35 am |

Kidding! Kidding! It’s a HE! PP found out that she was pregnant. QS then appeared and surprised her. He faked his death and gave up his throne, just to fulfill her wish to become an empress dowager and win her heart. So she gave him a surprise too: the empress dowager is pregnant. It was later rumoured that the empress dowager kept a male companion and that the 6th princess was actually not of the precious emperor’s bloodline. The novel had also hinted that their son, the new emperor, too had a monogamous relationship. 🙂

  81. Ollie
    Ollie January 16, 2016 at 3:08 am |

Thanks for explaining the novel’s ending. My thought process was like this – ok … sound good … good… even better than the drama …monogamous relationship, that’s great… ultimate birthday gift how sweet – hand on wait, what was that? He kills himself. WTF! … And she dies from the loneliness because he was gone. Don’t like that ending either. Sh!t, which ending is worst? There both both dismal.

    Hand on, you’re joking?!

    Nicely played my friend.

Maybe the companion she kept next to her was the abdicated emperor because he chose to live quietly with her without the title that separated them. So the 6th princess was from the emperor’s blood line but they couldn’t reveal that the emperor was still alive. I like that version better.

I didn’t realise that there will be a second season. I’ve been scarred from BBJX. I have no expectations and do not eagerly anticipate second seasons to well loved dramas including this one.

  82. Ollie
    Ollie January 16, 2016 at 3:36 am |

The scene when QS sits opposite Peng Peng, and then it switches to ZP opposite PP really puzzles me. If it’s the same soul but in different bodies, shouldn’t ZP sit in PP’s seat?

After PP dies, the soul goes back to the comatose ZP’a body… So ZP should be sitting in PP’s seat and look at QS – perhaps they didn’t do that because of the homosexual stigma in Chinese culture?

I am going to take a wild leap and hypothesise – it was QS’s soul that floated back to ZP’s body. PP’s dying words to QS was “continue living”. Perhaps QS’s soul is in ZP’s body and season 2 is about him adjusting to the modern world and finding PP reincarnation.

    @hungryhippo
“I have no idea what it means and to be honest I’m too lazy to bother. ” I wish there was a like button.

And you’re so right, the director has totally ruined the last 34 episode because of the last 15mins. The whole drama was centred about good humour and light hearted scripts. It’s like they got tired and forgot the main theme.

    @peanut
You are very lucky. You’ve been warned so now you can avoid watching the disaster ending. Or, watch it but stop 15-20mins before the end. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who doesn’t understand.

In episode 7, 9th prince was reminiscing about the past with PP and how PP ended up marrying PP. During childhood, PP was closer to 9th Prince as 9th Prince would always give her the malt candy which she liked. He asked her if she was inclined towards him now, just as she was in the past. She replied that even though QS was cold towards her, she was now the crown princess… 9th Prince cut her off before she could reject him completely and stated that his feelings for her would never change.

Alright, I’ve just watched the 2nd ending… had to get out of bed to go torrent the file haha.

SPOILER: ZP wakes up in hospital, runs around asking for “Qi Sheng” and the doctor. Then he grabs a masked doctor from the back, and it’s modern Qi Sheng. And then as Qi Sheng looks at ZP, he sees flashes of PP running through his mind… the end.

Haha… umm, so I like the possibility the 2nd ending gives. It forces QS to see ZP in his original form, and throws the sexuality question back to His Majesty. Do you like this person for who he is, or for the corporeal factors? And of course, I like this one better because they both get to live! Stop killing off hot characters, dramas~

I understand the sentiment right so the alternate ending will be to everyone’s (heart) content. I am definitely placated and even more so with peanuts’ comments about potentially a sequel of GPG. It’s very exciting. I wouldn’t mind more kisses and romantic scenes from my two favourite couple 🙂

  90. hungryhippo
    hungryhippo January 16, 2016 at 8:22 am |

@Ollie – lol, thank you for the lovely response.

I’m a bit of a panda when it comes to dramas/movies which are too artsy. You see I have this habit of not wanting to think too much. If I did I would have watched Chungking Express instead of GPG.

It’s meant to be a light-hearted and funny drama and the ending with the 1st alternate was simply too confusing. However, I wanted to thank everyone’s input because it made it much easier to bear.

@Hamster, just throwing it out there but the male version of Zhang Peng might be the original crown princess and not the time-travelled Peng Peng. I don’t believe Peng Peng has travelled back as himself. Although it does pose the question if it’s a dream, not so much sexuality.

However, given that the director is gay perhaps he wants to challenge society’s notion of gender and its view on love. As I’ve originally posted – does the ‘mind’ chooses to love someone based on his/her gender or as you’ve noted corporeal factors and how much of that is influenced by social norms.

  91. dominjoonssi
    dominjoonssi January 16, 2016 at 11:32 am |

just sharing some info I read online about a group chat with the director.
the director has said that there is no season 2.

the final ending is that ZPP, QS and both their children died in the fight for the throne. After QS abdicated the throne to his young son, apparently the Ninth Prince and the Green (Zhao) Prince decided to take action. The director has asked viewers to guess who sent the assassins.

I think the director is referring to the 1st ending when he answered ” it was a dreamscape ZP had while he was injured and remained in a coma. just like the dreams we have, a dreamscape is just a dream no matter how beautiful it looks. the two of them originally come from 2 different worlds and so they ended up not being able to be together. however, ZP learnt of the value and truth of love through this dreamscape. (dreams are very beautiful but reality is cruel.)”

seems that the 1st ending is that everything happened in a dreamscape when ZP was in a coma.

not sure about the alternate ending, but it makes some reference to the original novel, the birth of the youngest princess and someone whoever it maybe is in ZP’s body in modern times.

there are some interesting online interpretations about the endings. I wish they have given as a straight forward HE but I feel that the director put in a lot of thinking about the ending in his own way. so I’m going to sit on it and try to watch it again to see if I can catch any clues or decide whther it’s a no zuo no die ending.

everyone’s reaction reminded of the evangelion tv anime series, which sorta adopt a similar approach to its ending. The ending had a twist and was different in style, tone and content from the majority of the series, adopting a metaphysical and philosophical approach like what we are seeing for GPG. it can be a bit hard and confusing for fans who have come to anticipate or expect certain endings.

I like the novel ending and somehow I kinda like the two endings for GPG at first look. will have watch again later to be sure.

the prequel to GPG is actually 阿麦从病, which talks about QS’s grandpa generation and the background and y ZPP’s actual family background and significance.

  92. Ollie
    Ollie January 16, 2016 at 12:25 pm |

    @dominjoonssi
The director said it was a dreamscape? – that makes more sense now. QS really abruptly fell in love with her and fell out of love with ZS. And he, a man and emperor, committed to a monogamous relationship – she must have been dreaming.

    @hungryhippo
Thanks for the ep 35 link. It has soothes my mind immensely.

This drama has been fun. Where to next? Can anyone recommend any good dramas?

  93. hungryhippo
    hungryhippo January 16, 2016 at 1:25 pm |

Thanks @dominjoonssi – it make sense now! Especially with the alternate ending. I firmly believe it is the original crown princess waking from the coma. It ties in with the premises of the novel as it’s not just about time-travel but swapping of two souls.

I believe the director is making a certain point about love. His views that love is a metaphysical bond, a blending of two minds and you fall in love with their personality, their values and even idiosyncrasies – irrespective of their gender. That love should not be limited to or based on purely corporeal factors, as in most cases, but the individual.

I understand where he’s coming from. I admit that as much as I respect his views it is difficult for me to accept it as I still hold conservative views on love and relationship. However, I do applaud him for challenging the status-quo and society notion of what is ‘normal’ and in particular there’s no absolutes or boundaries when it comes to love.

  94. hamster428
    hamster428 January 16, 2016 at 2:08 pm |

@hungryhippo: I don’t think it’s the original c.princess. Like Jiang shi, original c.princess would never call Qi Sheng by his given name, but we see that ZP was calling for “Qi Sheng” the moment he woke up.

Also, QS saw flashes of his various memories with PP, showing that they had indeed gone through those events, so the time in which he traveled to the modern world and the time in which ZP wakes up = after assassination, not right after ZP’s accident, which means ZP had been in a coma up until that point, showing that no soul had occupied his body in the interim, leaving him in limbo state.

Also also, the connection QS has was with ZP’s soul in PP’s body. ZP’s soul in ZP’s body would continue that connection because at least one component of “that person” is there. But PP’s soul in ZP’s body has absolutely no link to their love.

  95. dominjoonssi
    dominjoonssi January 16, 2016 at 2:32 pm |

    some addition info

the first ending silent movie treatment was a mistake. when they uploaded the video there was a technical error and so the sound was cut off. the latest version has the bgm restored.

the title of the prequel book should be 阿麦从军、 the protagonist is ZPP’s grandmother. QS’s grandfather the Emperor had an unrequited love for ZPP’s grandmother so he wanted his grandson to marry the granddaughter of of his first love. ZPP was destined to be the future Empress so whoever ends up marrying her will be designated as Crown Prince. Lū Li was handpicked by QS’s grandfather and ZPP’s own grandma to serve as ZPP’s lady in waiting.

The Zhang family and Yang family played important roles in the prequel.

When EP36 is officially online on LETV, perhaps the director will have something else to add.

p.s the actress for ZPP leaked the ending early during a promotion interview when she revealed that her ending was that the entire family was massacred. but no one took it seriously then.

I’m really loving the BGM ost. and the duet for the theme song.

I have just finished watching the entire 36 episodes. The choreography is quite well done throughout the drama and it made me realised how well tango music goes with this Chinese periodic set drama.

I want to ask if anyone know the Russian actress name that act in a Mainland China drama a few years ago. No, it’s not Irina Kaptelova from My Natasha, she I know. Its another drama a bit earlier before My Natasha. I think the English title has the world “crimson” in it. It’s about a group of Chinese student went to Russia for aerodynamic studies, the Russian actress play the role of assistance professor I think. So main actor and her fell in love, married, knocked her up, she later bear him a son, and all that. After studies the Chinese students including the main actor returned to China and design and build and test fighter plane for China.

    Anyone recall this drama? Thanks.

episode 36 is an alternate ending. both endings suxs if you ask me. so in first ending in ep35, who ordered killing empress-turned-spiritual-homo-with-vigina? Happy dance right now – Our c.prince has denied the GAY rumours! YEAH. Not that means I get a chance (although I wouldn’t mind!) however it means there may be a chance with Peng Peng.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JokDoEJ4U3s

I can see from the interactions that they have great affection for each other, which also includes the rest of the cast.

Yan Yang is such a great guy, he was like – yes that’s right!

@Hamster – I agree with your deductions. How odd to see the modern QS and male Peng Peng at the very end. I wonder what the director trying to say here?

  100. Nina Simone
    Nina Simone January 18, 2016 at 2:39 am |

I spoke of 1st ending in ep35 where empress-turned-spiritual-homo-with-vigina, he turned homo because he become in love with the emperor, spiritual homo because he is a male trapped in a woman body.

Now about the alternate ending with ep36, he is back with his male body, running around looking for the emperor and found him as a doctor and he turned homo, Period! If the director add another 5 mins into the ending, they would be kissing and in bed and the whole cast would be thrown in jail by the Communist Party so of course they have to stop at the point just before jail sentence.

Chinese directors have a very subtle way of portraying homosexuality to their Chinese audience throughout Chinese novel history and most of the time probably the entire audience save a few like me got sucked into feeling sorry for the torn couple like male in woman body as in this case or a girl “disguised” as a male student and another bona fide fellow male student eventually overcome the fact that the former is “male” and decided to fall in love with “him” anyway(only to be rewarded/saved later on with the reality that his lover is actually a female and thus he avoided entering into a homo relationship)..

I will forgive the grandparent generation and even forgive our parent generation for not thinking more clearly when watching movies or dramas like this, but Chinese audience need to embrace Critical Thinking and in such cases, look beyond the physical form, look inside the flesh where the spirit and mind resides. In this case, it’s about a male trapped in a woman body.

Questions need to be contemplated long and hard:

    1. What and When decide your sex? Your sex is decided at the earliest moment your sex organ can be determined after you started to take human form inside your mother’s womb.

    2. For how long will your thinking remain under the original spiritual sex you were born with when thrown into the body of the opposite sex? 1 day? 1 week? 1 month? 1 year? 1 decade? Or after one fuck where your new opposite sex body you now possess tell you a different sensational story?

Possible Outcomes under the Empress conditions:

    1. He now with female body, if staying faithful to his original sex, will turn lesbian, a male fantasy come true right guys?

    2. He, along with his new female physical form, mentally also switched into a new leaf, considered himself no longer a male, as he is now dictated by his new found vagina.

    3. He remain confused, so he become bisexual under a woman body, he does it with the Emperor husband and he also does it with all the husband’s 1000s of concubines.

Possible Outcomes when he woke up and return into his original male body.

1 He is gay if he will go on having a relationship with the husband-now-is-a-doctor.

2.He return to being straight and leave the dream as a dream behind for good.

I feel like you should be giving modern China a bit more credit about their stance about homosexuality. Yeah, there are parts of China that consist of people who mostly are against it (but which country isn’t like that?), but China has made quite a bit of progress. They don’t have much oppression, the main pressure really comes from the fact that most families only have that one child, so family pressure, not government pressure.

Now, if you were joking about what you said….I’m sorry for being a dolt and not understanding.

I am not actually talking about Chinese government or try to fight for gay right here. My interest is purely on Chinese novels and in particular case, how Chinese audiences are treated with homosexual issue/dilemma in novel and how the audiences perceive what/how the author or director try to portray such, let’s call it, a plot. I am generally more interested to look more in-depth into characters in stories or movies, that’s all.

I am of course a bit disapointed no fellow fan has join me in my “discussion” like if you are thrown into the body of an opposite sex, how long will you remain thinking you are still a male, as in the Empress case.

By the way, why is the title called Go Princess Go instead of Go Empress Go? “She” married the emperor so that makes her Empress. 🙂

Oh my goodness, talk about heart palpitations!!

It’s been confirmed by LETV that they will be producing another ending for Go Princess Go on Valentine’s’ day!! So HAPPY ENDING number 3 (woohoo) happy dance with a twist just like Qi Sheng and Peng Peng. Can’t wait!

I know Moonhana! I’m fangirl screaming right now and I’ve seen the BTS pictures!!

I can tell you right now – the Vietnamese fans are ever so resourceful, not only do they have the eyes the back of their heads but spy cameras everywhere. They must have every relatives (or second cousins twice removed) conceivable working in TV or media because (I’m in awe) they have always been right!

It’s downright scary if not enviable. Anyhow, I’ll try and send you a link if I can find it on Valentine’s Day, which is the release date.

How romantic! I can’t wait for more sweet moments with Qi Sheng and Peng Peng.

At this rate, they might as well create another series with the same cast. lol.

@moonhana – lol I see what you mean and another season means more money for the cast. I’ve read the director’s too exhausted for GPG2. However, if it garners enough popularity I suppose he’d might make an exception. Of course there has be an incentive $$$.

They are currently subbing this drama on Viki.com. I’m going to re-watch it with English Subtitles!!! Hurray!! The experience is going to be even better. Can’t wait.

@Moonhana, not sure if you’re going to like it but because you’re a die-hard fan like myself, here you go

    Enjoy…or not 🙂

Perhaps we should wait for GPG2 or the movie. I heard through the grapevine (note: not so reliable source) that the main OTP may be reunited for another drama also based on a novel Princess, what is your gender?

@hungryhippo, thanks for sharing the 3rd ending released for Valentine’s day. I think the director is having too much fun toying with us.

I still like this drama though. Does anyone know where I can download this drama? I stupidly didn’t download and only watched. But because of some type of censorship, I’m having trouble viewing. Apparently the new modification has a lot of scenes cut. Please help.

@hungryhippo. Thanks for the link. I have no idea what I just watched …lol. they’re going to film another series? I rather they do something completely different together. A modern comedy would be nice. I don’t want them to act in another drama with a similar plot – it will be over played and not too original anymore after gpg.

@moonhana – I’m sucker for the OTP so I’m going to wait for the movie and potentially season 2. They have great chemistry so it will nice to watch them whatever they’re in.

Although I understand that perhaps you want to see them in a different movie/drama.

Episode 36 is closest to the original ending with the exception of the modern scenes that were added for a possible sequel. If you want to stick to the original story it ends when before the fade to black scene in episode 36.

I don’t think it’s a dreamscape because the original novel answers most of the plot holes. The plot followed relatively close to the original novel. Here is a plot hole explain by the novel. A minor god made a mistake of switching two souls at birth. The god rectify the problem by switching them back. Our main character was suppose to be a girl at birth, but lived most of her life as a modern male. The 1st episode depicts souls returning to their rightful place due to a mysterious force behind the event.

I also doubt the director had claim it was a dreamscape given the multiple endings he set up for the series. The internet not very credible for information. He either wants to leave room for a sequel or appease the government’s scrutiny. The series had been taken down before by the government. This isn’t the first time fantasy series had to change script because of China government intervention. The Chinese government want people watch their nation loving history channel and less about fantasy.

Episode 36 is closest to the novel with the exception of post fade to black. In novel she does get pregnant again and they do live happily ever after.
