I originally thought that I had, like others, travelled back in time.
In the end, I discovered that it was only a simple job change.
A job that appears to be rather simple and comfortable on the surface, but in actuality is a job that forces one to have excessive leisure time on hand.
The Messengers; they wander through each and every era in order to prevent wild and solitary spirits from causing trouble in the human realm.
Although it sounds like a great and respectable job, the reason why I was selected amongst the hundreds and thousands of spirits is because of three words – when I was alive, I “knew my place”.
Working continuously for 10 years without a job change is an advantage in today’s day and age, someone told me in all seriousness.
Because being a Messenger has become the job with the highest quitting rate in the Underworld…
This story details how a spirit Messenger and a human fall in love with each other. The story begins with the female lead having died in the twentieth century and returning to the Underworld, only to find out that she has been selected to become a Messenger. She hesitantly accepts, and thereby begins her life in the Underworld…
As a Messenger, the female lead is responsible for ensuring that the spirits of those who recently died remain in their bodies for subsequent collection. Although she is visible to people in the human world, they are unable to remember her face or her name, or much detail about her. It is under such circumstances that she meets the male lead – a young child begging for food to save his dying sister. Although she attempts to save the male lead’s sister, she ultimately fails, but inadvertently changes the fate of the male lead. Due to the male lead’s excellent memory, he is somehow able to recall a vague recollection of the female lead, and this is how they begin their companionship of twenty years.
The female lead, Qi Qi, is a very simple and unambitious spirit, and is unable to truly understand or sympathize with the male lead’s growing ambitions. She only taps on her ability to enable the male lead to survive (for instance, by providing the male lead with advanced medical knowledge only discovered in the future in order to help him find a job). However, due to the immense advantage the male lead is able to gain because of her power, the female lead gradually begins to doubt whether the male lead truly cares for her, or whether he is simply using her to amass more power. Her doubts and unhappiness eventually contributes to the subsequent separation of the male and female lead.
The male lead, on the other hand, is an ambitious person who patiently waits for the female lead to return to him as promised, but to no avail. Thus, he decides to sacrifice his ambitions, his fortunes, and ultimately his life in his attempt to locate the female lead after their separation. Although he wasn’t certain whether he’d be able to find the female lead, he nevertheless enters a highly contagious city of people infected with some strange illness in the hopes that he’d be able to find the female lead there, doing her job.
Wahhhh, you always introduce my type of books heehee, another novel added tk the reading listtttt
What an interesting story ;u; I hope that it’ll get translated someday.
…I have a really soft spot for C-novel doctors orzlll
LELZ – saw this in my library this morning and totally disregarded it! HAHAHAA might go back for it now 😀
@Sparklingdawnlights
Hope you like this one! This novel isn’t as exciting or dramatic though, mainly because Qi Qi is such an unambitious character who’s main characteristic is to live and let live. But the romance portion is pretty sweet, and quite cute.
@ Kura Ou
C-novel doctors? Haha the male lead in this novel isn’t exactly the model doctor (he’s really quite selfish, actually), and the author doesn’t really spend a lot of time describing the medical profession! But it’s still a pretty nice book 🙂
@ DancingUgly
Haha check out the book if you have time on your hands, it’s a pretty easy read after all – unless you’re looking for something totally epic then this might not be your cup of tea. Try it if you’re looking for something lighter and easy 🙂
Is there a audiobook for this though? Due to my horrible Chinese I can only understand 77% of the book and read it at a snail’s pace 😛
@ Sparklingdawnlights
There isn’t a complete audiobook for this, unfortunately, and the uncompleted ones that do exist are not of great quality, which is why I didn’t put the audiobook links up. It does sound really tough for you though, so kudos for perseverance!! 😀
It sounds like this novel had a SE? I’m not sure if I should read this if so :X
@tiffyisland
It’s a HE, no worries! 🙂 So feel free to jump into it if you’re interested! 🙂
This book is very appealing but i have a feeling the angst level is through the roof…
Highly intersted in this! I love the occult, especially Chinese mythology 😀
Hiii, I’m translating the first chapter of this books as per request. Can anyone help me with these terms?
鬼差: Should I follow her transations and leave it as “Messenger” or should I use “Spirit Messenger”?
鬼头大哥: I have no idea how to translate this at all… I tried Brother head ghost but it sounds extremely awful.
@ Bearbear I hope you enjoyed the novel, although I don’t think that there’s any in-depth dealing with paranormal per se. It does give an interesting take on spirit messengers though, and how they interact with the human world.
@ Sparklingdawnlights I apologise for the late reply, but I’m stumped too with respect to the term 鬼头大哥. I think Brother Head Ghost could be too literal a translation, but some Chinese words are just impossible to translate… T_T I think Spirit Messenger/Messenger works fine btw (:
