Friends and relatives always say the same thing to Mrs. Yang: “You’re so blessed. Both your daughters are doctors. What good fortune you must have been blessed with in your past lives.” Mrs. Yang can only nod meekly and say, “Yes, yes, that’s right,” because it is hardly worth the trouble of explaining.
How should she put it? Both girls are beautiful, exceptionally bright, and only eighteen months apart in age. Quite independently of each other, they both entered medical school at the age of sixteen. Even after completing their internships and beginning their medical careers, they still looked like girls.
Yet unlike most mothers, Mrs. Yang never had particularly high expectations for them. She has always said that all that matters in life is being healthy and happy. The other aunts and older female relatives disagreed. “When your children get straight A’s in all nine subjects without needing any pushing from you, of course you can afford to say that.”
And what about marriage? What about starting a family? Mrs. Yang was too embarrassed to say it aloud.
Neither daughter even had a boyfriend.
