Paper Rose 纸玫瑰 by 林笛儿 Lin Di Er (HE)

The story begins with a wedding. Then it moves to a flashback of when they first met. Kang Jian is the assistant to the city mayor whereas Bai Yan is a nurse. He pursues her but she pushes him away because she is realistic and doesn’t see a future for them due to the differences in their social status. Ultimately, they still get married but he is cool towards her. She is at a lost as to what she did wrong and is not sure how to fix it so decides the best thing to do is continue to be nice to him in the meantime until things work out.

Then his mother comes to visit and this is when the trouble starts because the mother is really mean to her. Later, the mother suggests all the parents meet. It is not until her mum and his parents meet that Bai Yan realizes her mum was the “xiao san” (mistress) in his parents’ relationship and he married her for revenge. Kang Jian has never abused Bai Yan, just acts cold towards her but at this point where she is asking for a divorce, he finds himself falling in love with her. Will their marriage be able to survive all these deceits and hurts? How will all these entanglements end?

It’s a nice story, good mix of humor and angst. If you are a Fei Wo Si Cun’s fan then this book is a must for you:) I prefer this author’s book because the female lead is much stronger and the male lead is more likeable compare to FWSC’s books. There are 4 books in the rose serial. I’ve heard a lot of praises for Paper Rose for a long time and this is one of the better book by this rather popular author.

Lidge and I are reading it at the moment. She is ahead of me but I cheated and skipped to the ending bcos I can’t contain my suspense any longer, lol. Come on, she can read a book a day whereas I can only read a book a mth:( At times, the book feels rather draggy yet strangely addictive. It is also rather realistic yet unrealistic. The story is nothing new but the author is pretty good at her writing and language so she manages to evoke many emotions and touches the readers’ hearts. Tissue pls.

I went to read a quite detailed spoiler. Wah, so many twists & turns, so complicated. i tut I know everything but it turns out that I am half wrong, lol. I’ve to give the author some credit in surprising me. The story is cliche yet there are bits & pieces that are different. A lot of food for though here so I gonna continue reading the story eventhough it’ll take me forever to finish it bcos I feel this story deserves my attention.

Awwww…..has anyone finished reading this book?

Ming Tian’s paper roses and his tears are making me cry buckets…..

I have not finished yet, just taking a breather to get more kleenex…

Surprise! Surprise! I can’t believe you are reading this rather realistic & angsty book. After laughing too hard, you want to cry now:P? Which chapter are you at? What you wanna know? Better don’t tell you the spoilers or else no more suspense. All I’ll say is prepare more tissues, lol. Anyway, happy ending for the OTP so there is still a silver linning.

I like Bai Yan. She is funny, smart & strong. Her replies to Kang Jian’s ex-gf when she brought back the ring on her wedding day makes me like her instantly. I’ll copy what she said if I ever encounter such situation, lol. Yah, you should read this book so you can learn how to compromise to sustain a marriage, haha…..

Yup, I’m surprised at myself too but I was told this is a very good book and complete with a very HE, so I decided to take the plunge.

But I cheated too, did a quantum leap on the chapters, lol…I actually started reading from chapter 40 onwards, now at chapter 85. The book seems so long. After both leads reconciled, I thought I was near the ending, but seems like still in the thick of things.

I also like Bai Yan very much, it’s quite a miracle she turned out to be such a strong person given her circumstances. Wahhh…..and she has so many men falling for her. But I must also say, I feel like kicking Kang Jian most of the time. What a total jerk he must have been in the earlier chapters of the book which I skipped.

Who told you? Cloud&sea doesn’t like this book. To each its own as everyone has diff taste. Huh, the first 40 chapters are the best as they introduced the characters and background. How can you read fr the middle? I skipped chapters 40 to 85 but I got Lidge to summarise plus I read spoilers in Chinese, lol. Oh, you complement me, haha…..

Oh ya, a doctor, an assistant to the mayor & a pilot, so hard to choose:P Jian Jian is really not that bad as he is also a victim. It is more his parents’ faults. Later, you’ll be touched by all the things he’ll do for Bai Yan. Both of them are good for each other bcos they’ve awful parents. This book will be heaps better if it is less wordy. I don’t like to read abt her fren & her jerk of a bf who ran away with Jian Jian’s ex-gf. The 3 of them are annoying & I am not that fond of that doctor. Lu Di Fei is also a waste of time but at least he is funny.

On the whole, It wasn’t as angtsy as I expected it, I actually thought the angst and humour blended very well together but I also cried a lot.

My heart really ache for Ming Tian. Seems like the whole purpose of his existence was to provide love and care for Bai Yan while she was growing up. But such an unconditional love that could never be. This is the first time ever that I liked a supporting character more than the lead.

Although Kang Jian was also a victim of circumstances and he did redeem himself when Bai Yan went into depression, I still felt he was selfish, especially when he thought he was going to jail for ten years, and yet he asked her to wait for him. All said and done, and although Kang Jian doesn’t come close to making my list of top ten male leads, it was still a lovely book.

What a star Bai Yan was, she shined throughout the book. I can just imagine how hard it was for her and yet she tolerated Kang Jian and his nonsense during the early days of their marriage. I really thought Ming Tian deserved her much much more but their love was never meant to be. Seems like Ming Tian fully completed his mission and served his purpose in life when Bai Yan fell in love with Kang Jian. My poor poor Ming Tian, so sad for him. Reading about how the paper rose came about, it’s a no wonder she treasured it so much.

My vote for the three most hated characters in the book goes to Kang Yun Lin, Ming Tian’s father and Yi Tong Tong. Ming Tian’s father was despicable while Kang Yun Lin was totally shameless. And Yi Tong Tong was the typical materialistic ex-girlfriend who drives a sports car and live in an upscale condo while poor Bai Yan takes the bus and live in a dingy flat. Both Yi Tong Tong and Li Ze Hao totally deserved the bashings they gave each other towards the end of their relationship. What a good laugh I had!!

Now I hv to find some more time to retrace and read the first 40 chapters as well. This book definitely deserved to be read in totality, and yes, it would have been better if it was shorter. Many thanks again to my shifu for sharing this book with us.

Was bored one day and reading through shushengbar and this book caught my eye.

And I really enjoyed it! Finished it over a few nights (squinting on my iphone). Share the same views as Xinn regarding the characters. Bai Yan is probably my top female character in a Chinese novel so far. As Xinn puts it poetically, she really shines in this novel. Her rebuttals at the wedding to the Yi Tong Tong, how she bravely face the difficulties in life despite her family background and her intelligence in saving Kang Jian. Definitely not one of the usual female characters. Quite alot of guys (practically almost all) falling in love with her :p (abit too many I thought). I like Ming Tian just a little more than Kang Jian cos he taught Bai Yan to treasure herself and life. The meaning behind the paper rose is really sweet and befitting as the title of the book. Kang Jian started out as a really rotten character (gosh I wouldn’t be as tolerant as Bai Yan) but redeemed himself at the end.

Book has a realistic feel about it, not so much the scenario (characters are too interlinked) but in terms of characters. A little long as mentioned by the rest but quite addictive cause somehow the author manages to draw you in even though the storyline is nothing new.

Quite a change from the usual books I have read here. Thanks for the recommendation!

Wow, I am glad so many ppl like this book. We’ve all kind of books to satisfy all kind of taste, lol. As I mentioned b4, this is the author’s best book. Actually she is as productive as FWSC & has lots of books. I did sample a few & they are quite good but not as good as Paper Rose. A word of warning, not all of her books have ‘happy ending.’ Happy ending’ here is defined as where the male & female leads end up together. Some of the books have the supporting male leads end up with the female leads. I won’t really consider that as sad ending but to some like Xinn Xinn, may not be able to accept that:P

I read the summary for a book called 预谋出轨 with no happy ending. It is quite realistic in that in real life nobody will really wait for you as life goes on. Only in drama/novel world, we’ve ppl like lawyer He etc who’ll wait many yrs for the person they love. Even if someone really waited, the person they’ve been waiting for may have moved on. You’ll probably say we watch drama & read novel to escape from reality but at the same time, we also need some books to bring us back to the real world to balance off our brain, lol. Anyway her books are not so sad after all bcos at least the female leads end up with somebody.

Lidge read this typical book called 你是我最美的相遇 with a happy ending. I think the male lead is a news announcer and waited many years for the female lead to return from overseas. He is really good & nice as he gave up his ambition to achieve what the female lead wanna do. The female lead is not that likeable bcos she is kind of wishy washy abt her feelings for the male lead & the supporting male.

The synopsis for this book 我在春天等你 sounds really exciting abt a murder and the leads are a prosecutor, a criminal lawyer & a psychologist. Can’t find the ending yet so any info is much appreciated. I think this book 摘星 is about surrogacy & there are 2 books on it so I am sure it is very wordy. I like this author’s books but I am impatient with long book:(

All those books I’ve mentioned are published books but the author has a lot more books than that. Surprisingly Paper Rose is not published:( As you can see she is really talented as the subject matters she covered are diverse and different.

Bongsd wrote: Haizz I’m reading ‘Paper Rose’. I feel so bad for her, she’s so nice to him while he’s a real JERK. I hate this type of guy. He’s with her but one call from his ex is enough for him to leave her. He’s with her but can still sleep with his ex. It’s unacceptable to me. I really can’t wait for the second male lead to appear. Or she can escape with the ‘Siberia’ guy, not a problem for me.

I may have forgotten but I don’t think he slept with her after his marriage. Hang in there, he’ll redeem himself later when you get to know him better. Well, he definitely won’t make it to your fav guy list but he is not abusive like Hawick in Sealed With a Kiss. Come on, this book is abt a guy wanting to get revenge so don’t expect him to be a saint:P You can’t always read abt caring & nice guys which will make you’ve unrealistic expectation. So, this book is a good balance to help you to adjust back your expectation:P

    @Hey Bongsd’s,

Yes, Peanuts is right. He did not sleep with the ex. The final time he slept with the ex was the night before his wedding to Bai Yan.

I can completely relate to your feelings towards Kang Jian. I hated him too. Total jerk. But you may be able to forgive him towards the end, he was totally devoted to Bai Yan and nursed her back to health. Overall, the book is awesome, a must-read, hang in there and finish it.

    Hey Peanuts & XinnXinn, don’t tell me I’ve read a different version ! 😀

She said at chapt 1, the day of the ceremony that they registered their marriage one month ago, so they are already husband and wife. The ceremony is just to show to their families and friends their new status.

So when he slept with Yi Tong Tong the night before he’s already her husband. Btw, husband or not, as her boyfriend the fact he cheated on her, it’s not acceptable. Hey, I want my male lead to be pure and clean ! Haha Falling from my little cloud, that’s why I was revolted and harsh with him. But no one is perfect.

    Overall, it’s a great book !

I appreciate him more when he became a better man, who only loves her. And I love Bai Yan, optimistic and smart.

But some parts are a little draggy, like about the ‘Chen ShiMei’ and BY’s friend.

    XinnXinn January 7, 2014 at 3:06 pm |

Yeah, Bongsd have a good point here. The wedding was just a ceremony, I clean forgotten that they were already registered. Heehee….looks like I reserve my grey matters for other more “important n interesting” developments in the story…LOL…

Hey, I think Xinn Xinn gave the wrong info. Later Kang Jian confessed to Bai Yan that he didn’t sleep with Yi Tong Tong on the night b4 the wedding ceremony. He just went to see her only. Anyway I may have mixed it up with other books as I don’t really care where he slept, lol.

‘Pure & clean’??? Bongsd, you read too many fairytale romance novels & I need to recommend you some ‘dirty’ books, lol. I doubt many male leads are ‘pure & clean’ including my Feng Teng, lol.

I skipped all the parts on the nurse, her loser boyfriend & Yi Tong Tong. I can’t stand the 2 teachers. See, my prejudice against teachers in novels is well justified:P

    Oky…so I’m curious here……I just started reading…but I want some spoilers :p
When kang Jian pursued bai yan…..did he know from the start that she’s the daughter of the xiao San? Coz it seems he likes her from the little bits of info that makes him appear to like her….. Or did he only realize later on in the marriage……then doesn’t bai yans mum know that he’s the son of her lover?? But still allow them to get married??

    XinnXinn September 13, 2014 at 7:05 am |

If my memory serve me correctly, Kang Jian knows. It’s all to revenge what Bai Yan’s mother did to his family. And Bai Yan’s mother only knew abt Kang Jian’s family background during the wedding.

Oky…..kang Jian is a capital idiot!!! Dun care how loving and devoted he is in the end….I dun like him. I’d rather she have mr Siberia…..ooohh….I dislike kang Jian……I dun care even if he has such a sad pathetic background……didn’t bai yan have it worse??? And she turned out fine…..

    Spoiler spoilers

And yes kang Jian did sleep with yi tong tong the night before the wedding dinner…means he had an affair..coz they signed the legal papers a month before.

Kang Jian does not deserve bai yan….she deserves so so much more…..he totally deserves yi tong tong.

And poor Ming tian…..there’s no way they can be together….no matter how much they love each other……sighz…..

The synopsis reminds me of a drama.. Thai lakorn actually.. but i forgot the title.. maybe the story is just the same, revenge.. slap/kiss.. but since Peanut said the male character is different from hawick’s character, so no slap/kiss 😀

agree with Bongsd : “Btw, husband or not, as her boyfriend the fact he cheated on her, it’s not acceptable.” 4 thumbs up!!! 🙂

but still, im curious haha.. gotta use google translate 😀 thanks for recommending this novel ^^
